Subaru Select Monitor and RevScan Questions

Post by SubiePrice88 »

New to SSM cable and RevScan. Ive searched on here and RevTronix website and couldnt find what Im looking for, maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

I Just got the SSM cable from EvoScan and I have the RevScan on my laptop.

Ive used scan tools before, but that was 4 years ago in a Automotive Tech school and they were OB2, so Im a little rusty. But never OBD1 with a laptop

What do you plug the cable into? Obviously the USB goes to the comp but what about the other ends?

Also do I plug it in and than start the car? Or Have the car running and than plug it in?

Any and All info would be nice

-Thanks

SSM Cable:

Is this it, the yellow one:

Looks like it, but which way does it go in? Because it looks like it could go in either way

1) ODB-1 is a whole other ball game ;). Full of non-standard locations for each car for parameters. I assume you've found the EvoScan thread here and my updated config file by now? RevScan works out of the box with no config, except it doesn't expose all possible parameters and you don't know what it's really doing (I have a hunch it's using internal lookup tables for some parameters, which then isn't the real ECU data).

2) Yes, plug into the yellow cable on the car. Unless your connector is messed up, it clearly only goes in one direction.

3) You can connect/monitor the ECU if the engine is off but key turned to ACC. Most parameters will be 0, but others will still work (throttle, engine temp, MAP sensor, etc).

Not out of the box. It's configurable though to work...

I've been in contact with the EvoScan author and he stated the next release was:
1) going to implement my/logcall1 Subaru config files
2) going to have the ability to read in multiple config files. That way not everything will be stored in Data.xml. much easier for sharing configs online for different cars!

I'll keep reading the EvoScan thread some of it goes right over my head (obd2 is soooo much easier haha).

How do I use your files? or get them onto my EvoScan?

How do you get the cable to work?

For some reason my computer will reconize the new device and a windows help wizard pops up and asks if I want to install the device and than I go threw that process but It says it cant find a way to run it.

And if I plug the cable into the car and my comp it comes up with "cant find vehicle" on RevScan

EDIT: Uh found this..... "HighSpeed USB Cable for Subaru 1990-1998 SSMI vehicles. Perfect for EvoScan. Specifically supports pre 1998 Subaru vehicles with a 9 pin diagnostic port for EFI Datalogging, or if your vehicle has a 16pin obd2 style plug with metal pins in pin12 and pin13, you will need this SSMI cable. Included is virtual comport software to use this USB cable with serial port based software."

Yeah didnt download that. Is that my problem?

Official? No idea, he's slow with those. Although, tends to release a new beta every month or two on the evo forum he frequents... link to the thread he updates... although it seems his website was hacked and evo account banned or something. You can create a support ticket to request 2.7 beta 5.
SubiePrice88 wrote:Yeah didnt download that. Is that my problem?
Yup, need the driver. It'll show up as another COM device in Device Manager. Since the Revtronix site is down (and had the drivers on there)...if you purchased EvoScan they were placed at \Program Files\EvoScan\EvoScan v2.6\USB Drivers\ Otherwise you can download them from my site.

Ok sweet! I feel better now, I honestly cant thank you enough for all the help

Is this the same thing?

EvoScan/EcuFlash/OpenPort 1.3U Requires installation of USB FTDI drivers (installed with ecuflash, or EvoScan will auto install them if no drivers found on logging)
Otherwise you'll get this message: FTD2XX.DLL missing
you can manually install the Evoscan USB drivers: from C:\program files\evoscan\EvoScan v2.6\USB Drivers\x86\DPinst.exe /i

I downloaded the one off your site and my computer cant open it.

Also went threw device manager and I believe i found the file but it says something about how this program is not accepted and asks if I want to continue.

It cant be this hard

You need WinRar to open a *.rar file.

Yes, you need to install the USB FTDI drivers. Make sure you're doing this all under an admin account. What OS you on? What was the exact error message you got when trying to install the driver?

It's only hard for some :P

My OS: XP

Went thru My Computer to EvoScan v2.6 - USB Drivers - x86 - DPInst - that comes up with OpenPort Device Installer clicked next and than comes up with this and askes if I accept or not

"Copyright © 2004-2008 Tactrix Inc.

Many ECUs can only be reflashed a limited number of times before the flash memory is no longer functional. Additionally, modification of your ECU's software will most likely void your drivetrain warranty from the manufacturer and violate emission control regulations in some regions. In no event will the device manufacturer be held liable for any damages arising from the use of this software.

Click accept..

Than a screen pops up and says-

"The Software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either imediatly or in the future. Microsoft highly recomends that you stop this instalation now and contact the software vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing"

Asks if I want to continue or stop the download

You need to click yes/continue the install.

WinRar is available from: http://www.rarsoft.com/ -- I would suggest only installing software from the real/main site.

With the RevScan cable plugged into the laptop, open up Device Manager. Do you have any unknown devices (yellow question mark)? If so, then the usb drivers for the cable are still not installed correctly. Open the yellow device, click reinstall driver, and the instead of automatic searching specify the path of C:\Program Files\EvoScan\EvoScan v2.6\USB Drivers\x86\. Then once thats all done, if you unplug and plug the evoscan cable into the PC, it should show up in the Ports section.
