Running hot sometimes and don't know why.

Post by Smoothinto2nd »

Hey guys. This board has been a valuable resource for fixing my car up. It's running WAY better now then when I started working on it two months ago. My next issues requires some more questions though.

While cruising on the highway it sometimes starts to run really hot. The temp gauge doesn't spike but it gets uncomfortably close to the very top. The weird thing is I can make it drop back down to half by downshifting and flooring it. It drops and drops fast after about 3 seconds of WOT. It almost seems like spooling the turbo cools it down.

Possibly related is sometimes it has trouble starting once its been warmed up.

And possibly related but probably not is that sometimes (it's been doing this less and less) it will have a little bit of hesitation between 2500 and 3000 rpm while accelerating.

Any ideas what is causing the issues?

The car is a stock 93 SS.

Thanks!

Regarding the cooling issue. You need to try and determine whether speeding up, ie more airflow to the radiator, or revving the engine, ie more coolant flow is why the temps drop back down.

The two things that come to mind are a clogged radiator and/or a bad thermostat.

EASIEST AND CHEAPEST is to replace the thermostat with OEM part.

I am doing that today myself.....

Ok I'll start with the thermostat. I swung by the local parts store today and they were sold out of them so I guess I'll go to the nearest dealer and see if I can grab one there. I'll post back once I see if that works.

Thanks

DO NOT use anything BUT an OEM subaru thermostat.

ya I was kinda thinking that might be a good idea even while I was at the parts store. Thanks for confirming the thought.
