Fluid change recomendations
Taking the week off, and I was thinking about getting a fluid change in.
I was wondering what you all recommend for oil, and for filters?

Mobil1 full synthetic. For filter use WIX.

Re: Fluid change recomendations
I was wondering about using full synthetics. I did read up on Royal Purple, and this car has spent it's life getting it's oil changed at places like Jiffylube, so I'm not sure I should use a full synthetic. Or is Mobil1 not as high up on the chain as RP?

Re: Fluid change recomendations
I think the differences are probably academic and depends on who's marketing team funded the study. I use Mobil 1 since you can find it everywhere, it's fairly cheap, is used by expensive OEMs, and I've seen how well it worked with my own engine after 250k miles and the survival of an EA81 that ran perfect until the car was junked for unrelated reasons over a year after running at high speed for hours with less than a quart of oil in it. The Royal Purple also has plenty of proponents. I'm sure it's good stuff as well.

Ok. RP and Mobil1 are both available that the Shucks down the road. I just don't want to end up with oil leaks from using a synthetic, that I have read about.
As for the crush fitting deal, can I use any one, or should I go to Subaru and get one?

Thats what I have run in all my subarus with no issues, I like it and some people will disagree.
Also the Napa Gold filter, what I run, is pretty much the same as WIX (its made by wix I was told)

IMO Royal Purple isnt worth it, $8.00/qrt is a little expensive for me. Wal-Mart sells Mobil1 in 5qrt containers for about $22

Re: Fluid change recomendations
FWIW, I didn't have any leak issues moving to synthetic when I bought my Legacy at 107k. Don't go with the 0W stuff, though—the stuff pours like water and will leak anywhere it can (that's what happened with the EA81 and its bad rear main seal).

Re: Fluid change recomendations
That leaking synthetic thing is a myth. Kind of like how people will tell you not to run synthetic oil with regular oil but it's perfectly fine. Or some will say you have to go partial synthetic for a while and then go synthetic to ease into it. I've heard that one before, no joke.

Re: Fluid change recomendations
I went with the Mobil1 High Mileage version. Do I get extra credit for changing the oil in the snow?
I'll also say that the factory skid plate is a big pain in the butt!

Aw man! Oh well, at least the snow wasn't sticking!
No, it doesn't have the graphics on the side. the only other Mi(that I know of) on the site doesn't seem to have the graphics either.
I don't think I'll remove the skip plate, at least not yet anyway...

Re: Fluid change recomendations
The only time my car ever burned oil was when I was running Valvoline partial synthetic oil.
Had a friend drive the car away from me and get on it. Puff of blue smoke out the tailpipe on the 1-2 shift.
I wondered why I was going through a quart of oil in two weeks.
Went back to Valvoline dino oil and it never happened again.
Now, when I get my Frankenmotor together, I will be running Valvoline full synthetic in it. But it will have all new seals.
