Those wheels look good except they do look a tad large and it makes the car quite tall.

I agree that it does make the car look a bit taller and what not, but I think the look of the wheels blends better with the chrome door handles and the other accents of the car more so than the gold wheels. I still like the gold wheels but I need to get them powdercoated to look nice.

I agree. I hate gold and chrome. I'll be selling my door handles soon since I bought white ones. Just haven't put them in yet.

Where did you get white ones? I was planning to just paint my mirrors and door handles in the near future.

Tonight I decided to start tearing down the EJ22T even though I have absolutely no experience building motors. I removed the intake manifold, the timing belt and the wheels/tensioners, and the valve covers.
I am enjoying this so far, but I do feel that this may be too overwhelming at some point for me not having nearly any of my tools out here yet in AZ and no experience building motors.

Yup. You get in deep enough and it will definately become overwhelming if you're new to it. But it's that much more satisfying if you finish it.

The only thing wrong with this engine was a blown head gasket but I am going to rebuild the whole thing. I am thinking I will just get it honed, but nothing else special. I just need to get the parts to do the swap. What do you think about that strategy Kimo?kimokalihi wrote:Yup. You get in deep enough and it will definately become overwhelming if you're new to it. Very nice! Now take off the oil pump, water pump, exhaust manifold. I would consider buying a 08+ sti oil pump its a 11mm pump and works a lot better then the ss oil pumps. I would also start looking into some dohc heads out of a ej20g. Give me a call if you have any questions.

I think it sounds like a good strategy but really I probably don't have much more experience than you, if any. If I was going to replace a blown head gasket and go through all the work I'd resurface the block and heads and have the machine shop do a valve job and maybe even get cams. Also replace the oil pump and water pump as GC8 said and the idlers, pulleys, cam seals, valve cover gaskets, bolt gaskets on the valve covers and the timing belt too.07Evolved wrote:The only thing wrong with this engine was a blown head gasket but I am going to rebuild the whole thing. I'd probably go DOHC too. Haha. I'd either go delta cams or DOHC but delta cams and DOHC is pretty expensive.
I'm willing to bet that after I get this car running it's going to be super easy to work on since I'll be so familiar with the whole thing.

Here are some pictures of my rebuilds if you need anything for reference
http://main.experiencetherave.com/subaru/images/ej22t/
http://main.experiencetherave.com/subar ... t_headwork
I will throw in my two cents regarding the rebuild. The first rebuild I did was alright, but I really was not as attentive to the details as I should have been. I put in new bearings, pistons/rings, and had a valve job done. However, I should have had the motor decked and the heads decked. Also, I probably should have checked the heads after they came back from the machine shop. I also should have checked the clearances on the bearings more closely.
For one reason and another.....I'm rebuilding it again. I'm paying closer attention to bearing clearances as well as piston to cyl wall clearances.
So I guess the moral of what I'm trying to say is....take a little extra time and make sure every detail is being checked and as a result, you will most likely spend a little more money....

Re: 07Evolved's '91 Legacy L Wagon 5MT N/A
Just curious why you say the STi pump works a lot better than the SS pump? The info in the FSM indicates the SS pump is a 10 mm pump. At 5,000 rpm pressure is 43 psi and flows about 12.42 gpm, while the relief valve is set at 85 psi.fatgc8 wrote:I would consider buying a 08+ sti oil pump its a 11mm pump and works a lot better then the ss oil pumps.
It was my understanding that the SS pump had a higher oil pressure output since it had the oil squirters. But that may be internet hearsay.
You have any data on the STi oil pump? Did they change it in 08?

So, from I gather now...I am in need of a new water pump, oil pump from 08+ STi, a Walbro fuel pump, an SS crossmember....what else?
Why the EJ20G heads? How do they compare to the EJ22T heads?

I'm definitely going to get a machine shop to do some work to it once I have it all apart. I have heard I need to resurface the block, get it honed, maybe new heads, and definitely the valve job. What else should I have a machine shop do? I want to build this engine right the first time so any advice would be great. I will be buying a rebuild kit which I assume includes all gaskets, seals, etc.
Is it really worth getting a new DOHC cam and EJ20G heads?

Re: 07Evolved's '91 Legacy L Wagon 5MT N/A
All USDM turbo Subarus from 90-2007 came with a 10mm pump. In 2008 Subaru introduced the STI in dual avcs on the intake and exhaust side instead of just the avcs on the intake side found on the 2004-2007 stis. Avcs works off of oil pressure and since the 08+ sti now have it on both intake and the exhaust camshafts they upped there oil pump to a 11mm pump. Its now got a 11mm rotor in it instead of the 10mm rotor. I currently don't know the specs on the new pump but i do know that they flow a lot better then the prior pumps. A lot of Subaru engine builders are starting to use this pump simply because it works a lot better and its a lot cheaper then the Cosworth pump. I'm currently running this pump in my built 05 sti.Legacy777 wrote:Just curious why you say the STi pump works a lot better than the SS pump? Engine stand is like $40 at harbor freight tools. Get one. I also got an engine hoist there but I can't remember how much it was but they were both cheap as hell and work great.07Evolved wrote:Thanks D! I would get the motor & heads decked just to make sure the surface is 100% flat. They shouldn't have to take much off.
