Speedometer failing but differently then you think

Post by ericem »

lol well yesterday was going WOT then all of a sudden it drops to 0km/h say hmm maybe jsut popped out. So I stop, accelerate and it works, like normal but when you travel at a steady speed for more then a few seconds it drops to 0km/h. I have tried lubing up the cable, making sure everything is pushed in, etc...

What could it be? Still did it today and now it's bothering me... So take off works, then when driving steady it just dies and doesn't come back till I stop again.

The speedometer in needle isn't actually physically attached to the speedo cable. It uses the rotating magnetic force of a disc to make it move. Sounds like for whatever reason, possibly the disk have moved / dirty so the precise forces can no properly interact, I've got a bunch of speedometer pics in some thread...

Woot, I have a spare cluster, but I can just replace that one part correct?

Yes, you can completely disassemble the speedo cluster components and retain the odometer. Just be careful with the spinning parts and that tiny spring steel piece on the top of the shaft. I ruined one while investigating an issue with mine...

It doesn't seem like my speedometer is the issue. But more or less the tranny gears themselves hmm. Tried swapping that part in the tranny with no luck. Used a drill and ran it steady to see if the speedo would drop no issues, hook it back to the tranny drive accel, then drops off.

Is there some sort of clutch action? If the cable binds lets say in the tranny?

I thought that little short 6" piece of the speedo cable that screws into the tranny was purely gear driven. Never taken apart the tranny to really know. I bet someone knows though...
