Re: which head bolts?
Why not just use stock bolts? I wouldn't buy anything else unless it was studs.

Re: which head bolts?
Unless there's actually something wrong with your original bolts, you can re-use them without issues. They're not torque-to-yield bolts.

Re: which head bolts?
Well Haynes calls for 168 ft. lbs. then an additional 90* then another 90* in their torque sequence......thats pretty friggin tight for such a long bolt. The bolts have already been through two torque sequences (once at the factory, then once by the PO) I just wanted to cover all my bases when i do the heads cause I plan on being pretty brutal on this engine and I dont want to pull it back out until I'm ready or forced to do the bottom end.

Re: which head bolts?
You should read through that torque sequence again, a little slower this time. If you tightened it that much you would tear the block in half!MTFB wrote:Well Haynes calls for 168 ft. lbs. then an additional 90* then another 90* in their torque sequence......thats pretty friggin tight for such a long bolt.

Re: which head bolts?
ok, gotcha, inch lbs......glad u called me on that. That bein said, the PO did torque it to 168 ft lbs then additinal 180*, he was bitching to me about it was all he could do with a cheater pipe to get it torqued lol...I'll probably get new bolts just for that reason. /thinks to self/ gotta quit skim-reading the service manual....

Re: which head bolts?
Yikes. If the PO really tightened the head bolts that much, no wonder you're having a problem now. There's a very real possibility that the block/head mating surfaces distorted from that much over-tightening, you might wanna get that checked out! You should probably chase the threads in the block too (if there's any threads left!).

Re: which head bolts?
Yea he said one of the bolts didn't feel like it really pulled down like the rest.

Re: which head bolts?
That's pretty crazy. I thought that seemed a bit high. I never had my heads off so I didn't have to torque them down but I remember on my 89 toyota 4x4 the head bolts were torqued to about 80 ft-lbs.
I'm surprised you got those off and that he didn't strip threads. Luckily the threads are pretty deep.

Re: which head bolts?
I partially stripped a block because I confused 90 degrees with 180 degrees, twice...
