96 EJ22 in 91 legacy

Post by dayno »

Hey fella's and ladies,

Dayne from Canberra, Australia here. Just like to say thanks for the vast amount of knowledge I have found here.

I have done searches and am confident enough to do an engine swap. Just want to confirm a few things.

I have a 91 legacy EJ22e auto which my wife cooked to the point of the engine stopping. Ive found an EJ22 out of a 96 legacy with 5mt which I pick up on Saturday (755km away)

The parts I'm getting are as follows:

Engine/gearbox complete
pedal box (to convert to manual)
engine wiring harness
Ecu

Will I need other parts?

I will have access to the donor car so any little parts that a need I can rip off it.

Will the engine wiring harness and Ecu be a straight swap?

Do I need the engine Xmember or will mine be ok?

Is the 96 EJ22 a phase 1 engine ?

From what I have read I would have gains in efficiency using the 96 ecu opposed to the 91 ecu

Any pointers on the swap would be greatly appreciated.

Cant wait to get on the road.

Thanks for all the help so far. :)

Welcome to the BBS Dayne.

I would probably recommend using the engine wiring harness from the 91. They are different between the 91 & 96. The 96 runs out the back of the engine, while the 91 runs behind the battery off to the side. The 96 ECU is probably a better ECU in terms of what it can do, but would require a lot of wiring and maybe some additional sensors to get everything to work. The 91 ECU mounts up under the dash, while the 96 mounts on the passenger foot panel area.

If you can utilize the 91 intake manifold and the 91 crank & cam sensors that would be the way to go. The 96 EJ22 heads however are different on the exhaust side and only have a single exhaust port vs. the 91's dual exhaust ports. I'm not sure about the intake side and if they're different. They may be. In which case, you may need to use the 96 intake, but then you may get into an issue with compatible sensors to use with the 91 ECU. The TPS sensor is different, 4-wire vs. 3-wire. I'm not sure if you can bolt the 91 TB onto the 96 intake manifold.

Hopefully some one else will chime in with some more details.

Thanks lecacy777

I will see what condition the motor is in when I get it back home if I have to rebuild the motor I will make a hybrid.
I think I will do the straight swap if i can and use 96 Ecu. I like troubleshooting wiring problems.

the 96 headers should bolt Up to the 91 exhaust? will get those I think just incase.

Has anyone done the rewiring that needs to be done?

Cheers
Dayne

The 96 header is a little different, but may bolt up once you get past the header and front mid pipe section.

hey

Just an update. the exhaust ports are the same on both 91 and 96 heads here in oz. Single exhaust port per cylinder. i can get photo's of heads if you like.

I did learn that the auto box is huge compared to the 5mt.

cheers

Update

Motor and 5mt box in and functioning correctly. Thankfully.

I would just like to say a huge thanks to Josh fr the write up on your website, The electrical wiring was a breeze thanks to it.

I ended up using 96 block and heads with 91 intake manifold. I kept all 96 sensors except as josh suggested, Cam and
tps.

Wiring was all good except for the clutch switch

I wired in a relay to b15 connector, I think it was pins 11 and 12 that go to the starter relay.
The clutch switch wouldnt switch the relay. So I got a little creative and added a push button to switch the relay instead of the clutch switch.

Guess what I have now....... A Starter button. Turn ignition to on then press the button to start.

Such a good feeling. :-D

Otherwise the build went quite smoothly. Didn't strip any nuts or bolts. That is definatley a first for me.

I am getting a cel code 24 which is IAC, Why am I getting a code I wasnt getting before the swap. There is no change of ecu or iac.

What goes wrong with these and is it something that should concern me?

Glad to hear the swap went well.

I would check your wiring for the IAC just to make sure something didn't get pulled or stretched when putting everything in.

However, you may just try resetting the ECU or clearing the code.
