Rise of an Angel.

Post by Redlined »

Home from work sick so thought id start a sorta after the fact build thread.

The story starts here...

Was looking for a new-to-me car. wanted a cheap all wheel drive car for safety handling and an insurance break. Had whittled it down to Either an Impreza or an Audi Quattro. In doing research I stumbled onto the Legacy Central Websight where I discovered the legacys had the same drive train as the Imprezas and where considerably cheaper, both to buy and in insurance. Shortly after I bought my introduction to the Legacy world..... The Lemming.

Image
After about a year The Lemming blew a headgasket and I was... living on the generosity of others while clearing up debt. so I sold it. bought a cheap Saturn and started looking for one of those SS Turbos I'd read about on Legacy Central. What I realy wanted was a 90-91 5 speed in good shape. Six months later I found an add for a 93 auto with 166k in good condition with maintenance receipts.

I went to look at her. The seller, of course, had just washed her, so as I trundled around the corner at like 15 mph looking for the street address she was sitting there. Glistening in the sun against a magestic Mountain Backdrop. At that point she had a new owner. I just had to go conduct the formalities with the seller.

The seller was a very nice man. and they, indeed, had receipts for everything, Including installation of a NEW engine and transmition four years prior. I would have given the man asking price, but I was brought up to never give away money I didnt have to so after a stunningly fast negotiation session I talked him down $500 and drove home in this.

Image

First job. Repaint the rock chipped grill and clearcoat the headlights and added lisence plate frames to add that finished look.

Image

Shortly after I switched into the 98 GT rims I had kept from The Lemming and soon after purchased a color correct Junkyard N/A hood to which I Fastened a 02 WRX hoodscoop.

Image

Followed by a hand build "coffee cup mod" with the staring role played by a piece of Exhaust pipe.

Image

And an STI cat-back Exhaust.

Image

soon added was a set of RS turbo badges

Image

Image

Image

Having decided my course. I installed an Autometer Vacume/Boost gauge in a 2" Gauge "pod" on the steering Column.

Image

and a Hallman Manuel Boost Controller.

Image

Over the next 9 months I began collecting parts for the intercooler swap. Which I decided to delay until I upgraded to the turbo I wanted. So I did Suspension and breaks instead. In went a set of Whiteline Control spring on KYB AGX adjsutable struts. In hindsight the struts where kind of anemic for the springs. or rather the springs where more aggressive than I expected so I have to run the Adjustments all the way up to prevent "bounce" at freeway speeds.

Image

Image

Image

While looking for a set of STI/RS 2.5 6 spoke rims I fell into a set of JDM STI seats (of questionable authentisity) Which I am still trying to figure out how to get installed.

Image

The New Turbo (TD05h 16G) is installed. the 07 Intercooler is in place... just barely. I am tooling up to refit it with an appropriate (read 2002-2005) Y pipe and aluminum pipe. Will post updated underhood and current body pics after the Intercooler is reinstalled as im not proud of the current install.

While waiting for parts for the intercooler install I decided to try my hand with Fiberglass and did a custom job on her grill.

Image

Got all the new parts finally. 2002-2005 Y-pipe from Samcosport. Aluminum Pipe from Vibrant (shipping from Canada suck) 2" Coupler from Turboxs.com and a 90 degree 2" bend. Nothing Fit the way it should. everything had to be fit. measured, tore appart, trimmed. refit. eventually I got it all together and in place.

New turbo kicks like a mule at 10psi. shes running Very very strong. Picks of the install to come.

As Promised. add one td05h 16g and one 07 intercooler.

Image

on the downside I removed the hoodscoop to trim the hood opening so it would be more inline with the requirements of the intercooler. Ended up stripping one of the little fasteners on the bottom of the hoodscoop. anyone know a parts number of the top of their head?

Exhaust is a Moddified Cat back. had to add I think 6". Going to be adding a downpipe soon. Think ONE hanger had to be changed. otherwise was a straight forward install.

Still have the stock SS wheels. put new Snow tires on them this winter. Got the GT rims hanging around also incase I decide to pick up another subaru.

New DvD/Cd player with 7" touchscreen. 4 x 80 watt sound is an upgrade from the old 4 x 45 watt deck I had and... other than the cables all over the place (working on hiding them) for the I-phone, gets massive NEAT-O points!

Better shot of her with the body colored hood scoop.

Last few days have been trying. Finally getting around to installing all the parts I collected this winter and, as usual, nothing wants to go right. Intercooler came out ok but the Downpipe was a real bitch. Frozen bolts, broken studs and One hell of a time getting the bottom drivers side bolt out. Finally got it out the new one looks like its gonna be an almost straight in swap.... minus shortening the old exhuast about an inch.

The new downpipe sure looks impressive next to the old one.... lighter too.

Image

Turbo was a touch smoother. didnt have to break anything to get it out anyways. New uppipe/downpipe gaskets to be installed in short order.

Image

Tried to remove the passenger side Fuel rail... the rear top Bolt is seized. ended up beating it up pretty bad trying to get it loose. Think im gonna end up taking it out with the Dremmel. Driver side went smooth until I started to install the new rail/Injectors. got 3 of the bolts in and then dropped the bolt/socket/extension and it landed on the cross frame and rolled under the engine where I cant reach it so I decided to call it a day.

Next up install the passenger side fuel rail/injectors. reinstall the Turbo with new gaskets, New Sparkplugs, New Downpipe. Zeitronix Wideband AF gauge, A trip to the Exhaust shop and then.. finally a good Tune.

Ill keep ya posted!

Looking good dude.

I saw your car in Clatskanie like over a year ago. At one of the motels in Clatskanie, when it had the black hood scoop and the LGT snowflakes. I had my old white 95 legacy at the time and i was checking out your car in the parking lot. :P

This is just the project that wont die. FINALLY got the damn Fuel rails/STI yellow tops installed (BTW My fuel rails are not held in place byt 100% Hex head bolts! Screw you Phillips!) . Broke a stupid little hose and had to replace THAT. Then broke a stud on the Up pipe INSTALLING the turbo.... thats right. I cant even get that right. I broke a stud Putting the turbo in.

So.... Try as I might. cant get the damn Broken stud out. gave up and ordered an STI up pipe/cat delete from Invidia

Image

So Getting the stupid Up pipe out I broke a socked. ended up riding my bike to the local autoparts store... and got a flat tire so ended up hoofing it back. They didnt have the bolt I needed to plug the Sensor bung in the new uppipe so Im again at a stand still.

On the upshot. Got my EDM headlights finally! I installed them without a hitch and didnt have to break anything to do it!

Here is a Comparison shot of the EDM headlights (installed) and my old Clearcoated Headlights.

Image

More shots once I get her back on the road and the City lights installed.

So.... after.... 2 and a half weeks or so my car is almost back together. New up pipe and down pipe are in, all the bright shiny parts tucked away where only the most inquisitive will notice them.

Image

The Invidia Divorced wastegate Down pipe went right in and almost fit perfect! Almost!

Image

Currently Decrypting the Wideband AF meter installation instructions and might just install the old O2 sensor till I can wrap my head around it. Then a (rather loud) trip to the exhaust shop and she will finally be ready for tune.

Sweet! That's a nice downpipe. I've go a similar one of lesser quality that I just had a cat welded in just like that and it's getting ceramic coated right now. Those lights look real pretty too. Gonna get some one day once the price is right.
