Someone tired to steal my stereo today :(
Parked in a local commuter train parking lot.
Broke in, and proceeded to destroy the dashboard in an attempt to steal my new $300 CDN mp3 player.
The previous weekend, I had just sourced all the parts in perfect condition to install it properly, I had it all apart, and replaces all the faded and cracked parts.
I installed it correctly, with the 6 screws, all tight and perfect. Put all the trim in place, cleaned and perfectly matched.
I had just told my wife how happy I was it looked, all stock, my BRAND NEW 1.5 din cubbie.. it is all now busted.
They did not get the radio out, they did however pry from all angles - so you know what it looks like. and then when the faceplate broke off - they just jammed and poked away at the cover to get my Jane Monheit album out.
Those illusive 2 screws are a great anti-theft device.
They did decide to relieve me of a few cd's however my taste in music was not the same as theirs, so scratching the rest was in order.
I am so disgusted. I will be reinstalling the factory radio to play with the few remaining speakers.
There are so many nicer cars in the parking lot - why pick on the 12 year old legacy.
Phfft!

Is the face removable? If it is why didn't you take it off? Not trying to sound rude just curious. The reason they picked on your car is because they saw the face of it, or they heard it when you pulled up or someone told them about it. It really sucks that it happened, especially after you had everything lookin good. Just be happy they didn't get the whole thing.

Ok, I really need to post a pic of my setup soon. You'll see why. I just put the system from my brat into the Legacy on a temporary basis (cuz it's too heavy for permanent), I'll post pics of that soon. Sorry about the vagueness but it will soon become apparent.

That really sucks, sorry to hear it. I had my car rifled through about a year ago but the only things they got were my cell phone and a dual shock ps2 controller though. I had my driver side window broke in
(not in my suby) once while on a vacation and they took my wifes bag of clothes, her purse with most of our cash and credit cards, 2 pairs of sunglasses ( 1 arnett and 1 smith) 2 cameras ( 1 35mm automatic and my Pentax 35mm with 4 lenses my father had given me) my skateboard (never steal a guys skate, I hope they broke their arm
) cd's and carman + adapter, woolrich wool blanket and carrier and other odds and ends I can't remember. The best part was that I got to drive another 800 miles with the driver side window taped shut with plastic. The car didn't have an alarm. It was parked in front of a friends house in a good neighborhood, we got in late and planned to unload in the morning but I should have known better.
Thieves suck!

the faceplate wasn't removable? Did it flip back and hide? I thought pretty much all new head units detached. What make/model was it?
to answer yukonart's question....I do....but most of you probably know that by now and could disable it after me posting all that stuff in the engine forum
I am pretty sure it has saved my car from being broken into at least on one or two occasions. I've come back, the alarm had gone off, and something didn't seem right. Plus the dual zone proximity sensor is a nice guy too.....if people just hang out around the car it gets pissed off and braps itself. If the interior zone is breached, alarm goes off.
I need to check all the pins, adjust the prox, and make sure everything is working correctly
I always pull the faceplate off too if I'm in an area I'm not comfortable with. It's just one less temptation. Another good habit is to not leave stuff laying in your car. My car is practically empty. Only thing visible from the outside is the radar detector, and possibly my small case of cd's in the door pocket, but that is not very visible.
Other thing I suggest doing.....get a blinkly light. Even if it does absolutely nothing but blink, that alone is a huge deterrant for the wouldbe guys. The serious guys....they will get your car, regardless.....Hell, after workin on my alarm, where it's located and setup, I could bypass alarm in a matter of seconds, and just stick something in the lock cylinder to start it. I know it's probably harder then that, but it's definitely not that hard.

I've been thinking about doing that, because I don't have the money for an actual alarm system. And you're right Josh, if they really want it, they'll get it.Legacy777 wrote:Other thing I suggest doing.....get a blinkly light. I'm lucky no one ever looks at Subarus here. They also have the lowest theft rates. Dirt bags. My ex's Monte Carlo SS was a real target for thieves. You could pop the lock by pulling out the window real easy (no door frames, like Subaru but with longer glass), but instead they destroyed the door skin and interior. $1200 in damage for a $150 stereo. And it was in her driveway. I was ther at the time and if I had only been outside. If I may quote John Travolta from Pulp Fiction, "It would have been worth him doing it just so I could've caught him." Good luck, man. Probably was one of them ricers in the parking lot.

Acouple months ago my little brothers car was broken into. They broke the window out, ripped the dash to hell, and stole his really nice cd player that was worth more than his car(he has an 88 chevy beretta that he painted himself). After that my dad got him a new cd changer for the trunk, and an alarm system. The alarm system was only $150 at best buy. Luckily my "baby" was in the garage or thered be some thieves with their heads bashed in. Oh ya, the kid across the street from us. His car was broken into too. His cars been broken into before, so instead of getting an alarm he keeps his door unlcoked that way he doesnt have to get a new window(but he still has to get a new cd player it doesnt make sense). But the thieves didnt even try the door, they just bashed the locking mechanism in. Since then hes been broken into again and still hasnt gotten an alarm. (hes an idiot)

That SUCKS. I feel for you man. I've always got a bunch of stuff in my car. When I got the car there was a factory Subaru alarm in it and the dealer we got it from told us not to use it. He said it was a piece of crap and never worked right. Great! Regardless, it has the little blinky light which may or may not deter criminals. I've also got a ton of stereo equipment in the car including a 12" sub, aftermarket HU and speakers. It makes me a little worried, but I've also got fairly dark tint which I think helps. It's also a 12 year old Subaru which, in Oakland, goes completely unnoticed.

Oh, and I hope that F*ck that took your skate breaks more than his arm. I had my skate stolen once and I would've given anything to get 60 seconds with him in a dark alley

I had a wal-mart stereo that got stolen about a month ago. My window was cracked open (it was broad daylight and hot outside) so they fished the door open and tore up my dash to get it.
What really bugs me is that the radio was absolute CRAP. If they had come in the store, found me, and asked me for my radio, i would give it to them. I would still have my CDs that were in the cubby, and I wouldnt be struggling with electrical problems for the last 6 weeks.

Ya, how 'bout it. I had just spent the last 7 months up in the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho working/riding and was planning on hitting the parks while in Oregon (Burnside, Lincoln City, Medford, Ashland ect..) and the only park I got to skate before it got ganked was the lame ass sperm bowl in Eugene!eastbaysubaru wrote:

*Through my tinted windows* "Hey, lets steal his radio!" "What radio?"
--It's not even aligned properly in the picture. I just remounted it the other day and didn't bother getting the top edge from catching light, it will be slightly recessed in finished form.

Whoops! There it is. The side buttons can be all sorts of colors, too. Red, Blue, Purple, Green, etc...
And don't ask about the big blank space above the radio. If i told you, i'd have to shoot you in the neck. But I will say that it will blow your mind when completely finished. Oh yeah, and don't even bother asking what kind of material that is. Heh.. secrets are fun.

That REALLY sucks. I just had my skate ganked by the PO-lice while skating this gnarly spillway. We also got tickets for it that are in the ~$500 range. HURTING!!! I hope you get to skate those Oregon parts sometime 'cause they're f*cking crazy.Ya, how 'bout it. Sorry to hear about the Po-Po taking your board. $500 ticket is insane!eastbaysubaru wrote:

I was actually born and raised in Oregon and have ridin' all the parks and yes they're pretty crazy. Burnside has a special place in my heart because it started the whole cement park craze in Oregon. Most of my family lives in southern Oregon currently and I get out there fairly often. I grew up mainly in Eugene but spent time all over. I even got down your way a couple times for shows at Shoreline. I rode a little around there but never had much time. A friend of mine had his skate stolen at gun point at EMB.
