Stroker Motor Build
I'm in the middle of building a motor for my SS and I want some tips suggestions anything really.
I've got heads from a 02 WRX (I don't want to do coil over plug so I was thinking of taking the head covers from NA 2.5 heads)
Crank: I got from a NA 2.5
Rods: I'm planning on doing Manley H-Beams
Pistons: I'm planning on the Wiseco Subaru Hybrid EJ22 Block w/ EJ25 DOHC Crank/Rods Pistons or Part# WIS K602M975 - K602M98
Intake: I'd like to use the one of the engine i got the heads from but I don't know if i can use the TPS/throttle body and IAC that goes to that intake to work on the SS with out doing anything major wiring wise. Other wise I'm just going to use whatever intake bolts on, like the stock one. (I haven't taken the one from my project engine off yet to see if it'd bolt up yet)
If anybody can give me any tips or suggestions or even let me know about my intake I'd really appreciate it.

depending on how much you would like to invest, but this may be very interesting to you. A roller intake, sorry I couldn't find the Youtube video. But it eliminates the throttle body and varies the size of the plenum. AWESOME!!!!

Re: Stroker Motor Build
Roller intake eh? All I can find when I search for it is cams, which I'll do later for now the heads alone with a possible port and polish will be more than plenty.
Find me a link for what you're talking about and I'll look into it.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
You are using the phase 1 25L crank...right?
What ecu will you run? I don't think the stock will run those heads.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
I was planning on using the stock ECU with the Revtronix Stage 2 chip I'm currently running, why wouldn't the ECU work with those heads?
What ECU would I run if it did not work?
Oh and I believe the crank is phase 1 I'll double check though.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
I believe the cam signal is different on those heads, so the stock ECU will not be able to read it. I think the only way to run those is with a standalone ECU or a WRX ECU.
I am not sure if you can just use a cam sprocket from an earlier set of heads to bypass this issue.....it would be something to research though and there might be compatibility issues.
The easiest way would be to use ej20g/h or ej25d heads with the corresponding phase 1 intake manifold.
If you run a standalone, you can do whatever you want.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
I believe in the newer models, like the US WRX, they use different signals for the timing. I seem to remember someone using a bracket or something that held the cam sensor in a different position to run it using older ECU, and they may have used a different cam sprocket as well.
EDIT: NVM, the bracket was for running USDM 2.5 STI heads on a JDM/EUDM or WRX 2.0 liter block

Re: Stroker Motor Build
If you already have the heads and manifold, just spend a little extra and go standalone....that is a huge upgrade over any piggyback system. This way you don't have to backtrack.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
The cheapest stand alone I found was $1700, I' rather just stick with the stock heads and figure something else out if I'd have to do a stand lone. Especially since I don't know of any AWD tuners in Utah since Cobb moved.

I got my Haltech for 900 new. It's the Sprint 500. Also look into the Link....I don't think it's 1700 either. Legacy777 has one and could probably chime in on the price.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
I don't recall off the top of my head what I paid for mine.....but it was above 1000.
They now make different versions of the G4, so if you don't need all the outputs you can get one for less money.
Another option is to pick up a G2 or G3 Link Plus ECU and pay for the firmware to update it to a G4. That's what I have done. The upgrade is like 120 or something like that. If you can get an older G3 for 500, then you can upgrade it and it's essentially a G4. It just may not have all the outputs and drive by wire capabilities.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
Link told me that my G2 is not upgradeable to G4 firmware, which is kind of a bummer. Not the end of the world though, since it will still do what I need.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
This was from one of their guys on the Link forum. Maybe they decided not to anymore and want those of us with "old" systems to buy new.....
Who did you talk to or go through for your upgrade? The new generation of PCLink looks nice.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
How hard would it be to just turn it in to a stroked and bored WRX? I'm thinking it may be cheaper and easier till I get time and money for one of those stand alone systems.
So pretty much how complicated would it be to wire in the...
Coil over connections
OBD!! port
and really anything else i may need

Re: Stroker Motor Build
You will need a complete (pre drive by wire 02-03 for sure) WRX engine wiring harness (from engine all the way to the ECU), ECU and all the correct sensors. I think this would be easiest way to go.
Coil over plug connectors will be part of the intake manifold harness, and OBD port should be part of the in cabin harness....but I'm not 100% positive about that one.
I am not sure how the speed signal is sent to the WRX ECU.....since our cars have a mechanical speedo cable vs electronic on the WRX. This might not be a problem, but I don't know.

So pretty much as long as I get the harness and ECU that's most of the work. I may have to mix and match some wiring for climate controls and what not.
I'm thinking the speed signal is probably sent from the wheel speed sensors to the ECU.

Re: Stroker Motor Build
No, on the WRX it is sent via an electrical sender (which resides in the same spot as the end of our speedo cable) in the tranny to the ECU (for reference, i had to remove this sensor from the '06 tranny I used in my SS). On the new school turbo legacies, it is sent via the ABS system (one of my friends was having issues with this trying to swap a new legacy drivetrain into his car).

I Just sold my EJ20 heads to a friend in need, my father in law has some DOHC 2.5 heads he said I could have as well as the intake manifold for it. Worth it or just port and polish the stock heads and give them to the machine shop to work on?

Re: Stroker Motor Build
So I found out my cranks wasn't worth trying to fix and I'm too anxious to get my engine built because the one in right now is not running well at all.
So I've decide to just install regular forged pistons and see if I can do something about the stock rods, such as heat treating or shot peening.
I have ran into some questions with the intake manifold differences, primarily with the IAC flange. I noticed the turbo has a spring loaded flap on the... baffle insert? While the N/A does not and also has a notch on the bottom. I'm trying to figure out if I need to fill that hole if I'm using a turbo application or does it even matter?

Re: Stroker Motor Build
The flap is there to keep boost from back feeding pre-turbo. You will need to use the turbo's fitting with the little flap. If you could try welding on a little tab like the n/a has, or fill the hole on the intake.

sorry not thread jack
the obd 2 port will have to be wired in and located where you want it.
this is what i want to do in the future just due to the fact the open source tuning is free and just need the dongle and a laptop which will still be under $500.00 rom
best part it can doing n e everything a standalone can do but change maps on the fly.
they are working on live tuning as well, just not sure when it'll be done tho.
and keep up the great work.
