Swapped suspensions on my Subarus yesterday!

Post by Vandal_RS »

Well, I was contemplating it, and with a little prodding from a friend with a garage, went ahead and did it.

I swapped the stock springs/struts from my Legacy SS on to my 2.5RS and my V5 STI struts and stock RS springs on to the Legacy. The goal was to have one fun car (the Legacy) and one nice DD. I had the Impreza handling pretty well, and was able to keep up with the much more powerful cars I hang out with on our monthly cruises. Besides the STI struts, it also has a good alignment, 20mm WRX rear bar, and Whiteline endlinks, Com-C front strut mounts and anti-lift kit. It was just not satisfying enough without some extra power. I just returned to school and I am getting married in a month, leaving me no money to buy new components for the Legacy at the moment. I cranked the front camber bolts, plus the Com-C struts mounts, and I believe its running around -2 degrees in the front. Adding nearly 2 degrees of camber means it also has far too much toe out at the moment, so that needs to be addressed. My calibrated eyeball measurement tells me the rear is somewhere around -.5 to -.75, exactly where I wanted it. The car is much more neutral.

I can't say the swap went off without a hitch (a rounded off nut and a CV that gave up the ghost saw to that), but it was definitely a success. As expected, the Legacy looks and drives much better. The GC parts lowered the car about an in, which was also expect.

So the funny part is it raised my RS about an inch. For some reason, this didn't occur to me. My cars have seen their fair share of gravel abuse, but I am not really one to raise a Subaru. What's really surprising is how well the RS still handles, and how much fun it is! It hits potholes, dips, lips, and speed tables and speed tables at speed with no drama. Nothing upsets it. The fact that it is 300lbs lighter than the Legacy and has larger sway bars keeps body roll in check. Even though the struts have nearly 120k on them, body motions are well controlled. The parts feel much better on the RS then they did on the SS. The only bad part is it is currently has positive camber in the front. I just marked the struts and bolts before I took them out of the Legacy, so I should still have room to max them out and hopefully get a little bit of negative camber out of it. If not, I may have to buy a second set of adjustment bolts or another set of Com-C strut tops.

Here is my post on Dirty Impreza if you are interested, obviously gear more towards the RS. Don't be offended that I called the Legacy ugly

Here is a shot of the two cars as they sit now, unfortunately only shot I have of the Legacy after the part swap.

Nicely done. I love the 2000 RS wheels on the legacy, I plan to do that myself.

My friend and I recently did the swaybars on my Legacy, and we measured his stock 2000 RS sways - holy cow so tiny! Can't believe they put something so tiny on their "sporty" RS coupe.

Anyways you got 2 cool cars.
