newb with a sube 4eat
i just got a 99 outback with preblown head gaskets, thats the obvious, but when taking off it slips bad in first gear it has what ive searched to be the 4eat, now what could cause it to slip oil seems ok
the id on the trans has TZ1A2ZJEBAWZ on it i have looked for an ID but it never said the diff ratio
first do these trannys suck? and should I just swap in another auto or go all out and put in a 5 spd and whats the parts list going to be like and what car will I need the trans from ie year etc thanks! I have done some searching but it left me more confused and if i got manual do i need a rear diff too or is there a way to swap gears in the front diff? (terminology)

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
If you do a 5 sp conversion you will need the transmission, pedal box, driveline, matching diff to the transmission (Or find a tranny that matches the gear ratio in your car now) the trim piece that goes around the shifter. Axles should for the most part be the same, clutch cable if you don't go hydrolic, hydrolic cylinder and clutchslave if you go with hydrolic, and a proper clutch kit.
or just fix your 4EAT
or just fix your 4EAT

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
Welcome to the BBS. I would start by checking your fluid level. Check to see if the fluid is brown/black and if it smells burnt. The car needs to be at normal operating temperature, parked level, and the engine still running when you check the level. Also, slowly cycle the gear shifter from park to 1 and back to park again before checking.
If the fluid looks old/brown/worn, I'd replace it, and start there.
If replacing the fluid doesn't work, you can try replacing the trans with another 4eat. If you go with a 5spd swap, check out my write up www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/swap

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
ok will a 99 have cable or hydraulic clutch or can it be made to have either? and same for clutch pedals do they have to be from a hydraulic car or cabled car and can either be adapted.I found a 94 legacy will this stuff work? and how do i know if i have the right gear ratio? or will i totally have to buy the rear end as well? or can the auto diff be swapped into a 5 spd, sorry new to sub trans set ups

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
cable to cable and hydro to hydro. there's differences in the pedal boxes so you have to stick with what matches
there a code on the transmission housing white sticker with black letters & numbers, you can look up that code to see what the ratio is.
auto and manual rear ends are the same it's the drive line that's different.
your 94 legacy may or may not have the 3 holes in the firewall for the hydrolic setup, so you may have to get a holesaw and a drill and make them, i think somebody did a write up about that somewhere on here. cable clutch tranny will just go in an the hole for the clutch cable is already in your firewall above/level with the top of your clutch pedal.

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
no i want to swap 94 stuff into my 99 OBW, i have now gotten the car from the prev owner and it was 2 liters low and now shifts fine but how much damage has she done?
"auto and manual rear ends are the same it's the drive line that's different."
whats this mean driveline thats different you mean the ratio in the front trans part? thats what I was asking can it be swapped for the lower ratio from auto to manual or when i swap will i HAVE TO get the rear diff as well
mine is a TZ1A2ZJEBAWZ and after a search it has 4.44, now will there be a manual trans with same ratio?

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
no the drive line-shaft is shorter on an automatic to compensate for the larger transmission

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
The 94 non-turbo manual trans will be cable actuated. It's final drive ratio will be 4.11.
Don't you have the entire 94 car to use for parts? If so, just take it's diff and don't bother swapping the diff in the front.

The 94 is MT right? 2 liters is a bit low. It's hard to say. If it sounds alright and there's not a lot of metal shavings on the drain plug. It's probably ok.

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
right but the OBW with the low trans fluid is an auto, i want to put a manual from a 94 into the 99
Re: newb with a sube 4eat
I guess I don't understand or missed something. If you want to put the manual from the 94 into the 99, then what does it matter what the auto trans fluid level is at?

Re: newb with a sube 4eat
two separate things, because she ran it low i want to swap it out and i like manuals, but you thought I was referring to the manual being low on fluid, I guess if i must i will change the rear end also, i also thought of trying to keep it 4.44 in case this car gets a few inches of lift and bigger tires
