I need a new crankset

Post by Legacy777 »

The middle crank on my bike has some pretty nasty worn teeth. I took a spill the last time I was out that I think took a chunk out of one of the teeth, and it causes the chain to skip. I tried filing things down a little today, but it didn't seem to work.

I'd like to try and buy just another middle crank gear, but not sure I can get one. It's a Shimano SG J32 ring. The crankset is a Deore LX. Any ideas on where I can find one?

Did you ask a bike shop? I swapped out the middle chainring for the same reason on one of my bikes years ago. I just went in and told them how many teeth I wanted. IIRC, it was even in stock. I think the 5-bolt pattern is pretty standard or at least with the common Shimano as the new gear was a different finish to the old ones.

No I haven't done that. I probably just need to do that.

Yeah any bike shop will have that in stock. If you do feel like spending some money you could just upgrade the crankset as you stated,i much prefer all SRAM stuff when it comes to driveline but i know nothing of your setup.

JC,
Just bought a new Deore LX 9-speed shifter for $10 off Ebay....Cranksets look to be around $100-ish.

BTW, why do you need a triple on the front.....isn't Houston flat? :-)

I don't really need a new crankset, just a near chain ring.

It may be mostly flat....but there's a few spots I ride in the trails that aren't flat :)
