swapping transmissions in a 94 SS

Post by greg donovan »

curious about what is needed to swap in different transmissions in my 94 SS.

looking at putting in a trans out of a non turbo legacy or a 98-01 RS.

the reason is i want a 4.11 trans in the car.

i also may be replacing the engine with a non turbo 2.5 at some point too. so power potential isnt an issue for the trans. doing this to meet the rookie rules for rally america that dont allow rookies to run a turbo engine and to run the car in open light.

Admittedly, I'm a noob to the 5-speeds, but I do know you'll have issues w/the PULL vs. PUSH type clutches used in the mid-90's 5-speeds. This CHART may help, but it's known to have a few errors.

I believe a new clutch MC/slave cylinder would be needed...and maybe clutch pedal/pedal set?

the 90-94 5 speed N/A transmissions were cable/push style and the turbo legacy/gc8wrx were pull style hydrolic.

if you want to use an na transmission, you also have to get the pedal box, clutch kit to match the transmission, cable, and the diff.

if your taking out a hydraulic clutched tranny and putting a hydraulic clutched tranny in it shouldn't be too hard. You will need a different clutch step, but the slave cylinder from the SS might just bolt onto the RS tranny, I'm not sure if they are reversible like that.

You should just need to change the slave cylinder....and may need to change the clutch master cylinder if the sizes are a lot different.
