Changing valve cover gaskets

Post by Mirage »

Valve cover gaskets are leaking.. did a quick search and it seems to be a pretty simple process, take off 3 bolts on each side, replace gasket, and bolt cover back on according to torque specs.. 9ft/lb.

What I couldn't find was do I need to drain the oil first and also if there will be any hard to scrape off residue from the old gaskets? If so, what can I use to scrape it off with without damaging the mating surfaces?

Thanks in advance.

You will not need to drain the oil. There will be a little bit of residue that will leak out but not enough to constitute a mess.

As far as residue, eh, maybe a little. Just take a rag and little acetone and wipe the surface down and that'll take care of anything that may be left behind. It won't be like replacing intake/exhaust/HG gaskets that leave behind a lot of stuff.

I highly recommend replacing the three grommets on the valve covers as well. They actually cause more leaks then the valve cover gasket.

Also, replace the o-ring for the filler neck on the driver's side valve cover.

Yes, the grommets are just as important. You're barely torquing them down so the grommets have to prevent vibration from rattling the bolts loose as well as seal properly.

Excellent. I will go ahead and order the rubber grommets as well as the o-ring on the filler neck. The grommets are probably a bit dried up from the heat, just like the o-ring after 14 years.

you may also want to take care of the spark plugs and sparkplug seals since you are opening it up.

Spark plugs.. have I got a story...

The car came with NGK Platinum plugs and when I went to put in a brand new set of the BK6RE-11's, the car proceeded to hesitate even under the slightest boost. Any ideas? Stuck the Plats back in and things are fine.

Does anyone have part numbers on the valve cover gaskets, grommets, and the o-ring?

You'll also need the gasket for the filler neck.

O-ring - 806923060

Here's the updated part # for the grommets
13271AA051

13294AA012 is the correct part # for the gaskets. I think Robert got the 2 & 9 transposed.

So, before I order, I just want to double-check...

I need:
(1) Oil filler neck o-ring - 806923060
(2) Valve Cover Gaskets - 13294AA012
(6) Grommets - 13271AA051

Correct?

When you changed the spark plugs did you make sure they were gapped properly?

At least the 3 grommets for the EJ22T valve covers are the same size as the 6 on the EJ20G valve covers.
