66MPG Metro What is BS and What is Legit?

Post by kimokalihi »

I stumbled across this website where somebody has done a few mods to their 92 Geo Metro and achieved 66MPG on essentially the same engine I have in my 98 Chevy Metro. Only real difference being I have OBD2.

http://www.jeremiahsviolins.com/66%20mi ... Metro.html

Mods:

Economy Grind Camshaft
Cylinder Head Mods (lol)
Heated Fuel
Modded O2 Sensor Signal
K&N Filter
Aftermarket Race Header
Open Exhaust With Glasspacks
Magnecor Spark Plug Wires and Halo Plugs (?)
Covered Vents In The Bumper

I'm going to guess his improved fuel economy is probably coming mainly from the economy cam, 02 sensor mod because it's allowing him to run very lean on cruise, open exhaust and possibly the heat exchanger in the fuel line.

Right now with a semi-lead foot I get 35-37 MPG in my metro with the same engine. Once upon a time I got 42MPG driving like a granny but that's no fun. This guy has achieved a 50% increase in fuel economy which is pretty impressive. I tend to get like 325 miles on a tank of 8-9 gallons. He got 648 miles on a tank of 9.75 gallons.

What do you think is netting him these gains?

I'd say the cam and maybe the O2, if it does let him run leaner at cruise, but my guess is he's a real asshole on the road and that's the biggest contributor. The car is slow as it is and running that kind of cam would only make it worse, but I wouldn't doubt it if he almost never excedes 25% throttle when accelerating anyway. Me, I'd rather improve aero than reduce power. . . But isn't yours a newer design? I thought the second generation Metro was bigger and heavier. That would be a big reason right there.

Since you have OBD2, you might want to think about getting a Scangauge II if you want to improve your mileage. You can get your mpg in real time and see how driving habits affect mileage and adjust accordingly. You could also look into if there are transmission options that have a taller top gear, providing it has enough of a surplus of power to run it.

AHA! I already have ScanGaugeII! I have monitored my MPG and how my driving affects it. I'm not really trying to improve my fuel economy because it would mean driving like an old woman and I'm not into that. I just thought this was interesting.

I'm thinking you're right. He probably drives like those hypermiling drivers. There's no way I could do that. What would be nice though would be a taller 5th gear in my trans. That would help a lot I think. At 60MPH I'm at about 3,000 RPM. In my subaru with 4.444 final drive I'm only at 2,500 at 60MPH. That's what kills my gas mileage. I drive everywhere at about 55-60mph. If I drove 50mph I would get significantly better gas mileage. But 50mph is SLOWWWW.

3cylinder. 48-52 is pretty high. That car is only rated at 35 city and 41 hwy. Your car is geared higher than mine.

so thats the guy that drives 45mph in a 65mph zone...LOL... thats why he gets that mileage. of course with the mods hes done it helps alot. less fuel and less exhaust restriction at cruise is like rolling down hill.
