Making Coilovers off WRX Fit. Help.

Post by Florin1 »

I picked up some coilover from a 02 WRX, and need to make them fit on my 91 legacy track car. The rear tophat bolts are spaced further apart from center than on my car, so whats my options? Re drill the chassis in the rear? How would one make a template? Here is a picture of the tophat. Image Notice its got a straight side, that can potentially help on the side where it would touch the body.
As for the front, i think the tophat bolts holes are slightly rotated on the wrx because i cant get the camber adjustment to be pointing to the wheel. Here is the 3 pictures with the different ways it bolts up. Should i just go with the closest fit, or re drill the front as well? Image
This one is the closest fit ---> Image

Do the damper tops have to use their top mounts or are they a Subaru fitment? If they are a Subaru fitment, you should be able to use your stock top mounts until you figure something else out.

Otherwise you need different top hats or to drill new holes.

Agreed...first see if the tops can be swapped for Subaru tophats.

I do know that for the rear, you have to use the 1st gen tophats.

as for the fronts go with pic #1. it will allow you do adjust camber AND castor. which is a plus. fo rthe rear i would just find GC rear pillowball mounts/ or camber plates and not redrill

redrill the front, i had to do that to install my wrx Zeals... took 15min. I redrilled my rears too to use the adjustable camber plates, but since yours arent its your call wether to drill or not, id use stock rear tophats if i was you, because in a sedan you cant drill from the top like a wagon, due to theres no room.

i dont know how to post my own forum on here yet...yes im a noob. but any ways this is the closest forum to my question, i have a leggy i just picked up and is slammed on obx racing springs but stock (blown) stuts that make for a very rough ride. my question is i want to use the obx springs but dont know what strut to go with to keep the car low

the strut isn't going to raise your car that much so just find yourself some new struts.

As far as drilling the strut towers, the "Correct" way to do this would be to get some strut tower bars and use those as templates. in a sedan if you want to drill from up top, get a 90* adapter for your drill (cordless drill would probably help out alot) and just use a small bit (1/8 in size) to drill from up top in the center of your holes you want to make (from your templae) then change bits accordinjg to size and drill the holes out from underneath.

since you have the strut bars might as well install them (If there's no widened fitment issues) and that should give you that added strength that you may have lost from adding holes to your strut tower.

I plan on doing this when i pick up my coil overs. I found some company that sells new coil overs for 02-07 wrx (+04 sti) for 400 bucks called raceland. i know they're kinda cheap but for 400 bucks and it's just a daily driver (No crazy cornering going on here) i think it's worth it.

you can also redrill the rear tophats with the legacy pattern and move the studs into the new holes
as for the front, dont redrill, leave them like in the first photo
the added caster will help with turn in and make the car handle better too

I didn't think of that, those studs should just be pressed in correct?

-vossman215,
The wrx struts WILL raise your car in the rear. Luckily, mine are coilovers so i just lowered it about 1.5". Now my other 94ss, i put struts off a 05 wrx. It ended up jacking up the rear quite a bit. Like 2 inches. And that is with lowering springs. So i think i need to get my old struts, and put my koni inserts into those.
Ps. I used my old top hats in the rear, on both cars...

ya they are splined so make sure the hole is a little snug and then use the nut to suck the stud into the soft alu
