starter problem?

Post by fatgc8 »

Ok so this morning I get up and turned my car on to go to work and nothing happens. Im like ok cool the starter finally took a shit so I ended up getting a ride and came back to fix the car after work. When i got home I went to autozone (because they were the only ones opened) and bought a duracrap starter then installed it and now it clicks but the car doesn't turn over. I checked my terminals and all the negative connections. I also replaced the battery a couple weeks ago and cant figure out what it could be? Does anyone think that the reman starter I got is the problem?

It's possible that the new starter is the problem but it's more likely that the battery is run down. Is it possible that your alternator is failing?

It's also possible that one or more of the battery cables are loose, either at the battery end or at the starter end.

Check the battery voltage. If you don't have a voltmeter, you should be able to buy one for like ten bucks and you'll use it over and over in the future.

Ok so i took the starter back to autozone to put it on there tester and everything seemed fine? :? I also took a circuit tester and checked the power and ground wires to the starter and they are also fine. Im totally stuck right now and need some help.

A circuit tester will show a good connection even if a battery cable is loose. Did you verify that all ends of all battery cables are firmly attached?

Did you check the battery voltage? I think AutoZone can test your battery for you.

All there really is to the starting system is the ignition switch, wires, battery, battery cables, and starter. If you hear the click of the starter solenoid then the ignition switch and wires are most likely doing their job. A loose cable or weak battery might be able to supply enough current to make the solenoid click but not enough to make the starter turn.

I replaced the battery with another one from my dads truck and i still have the same problem. All my battery cables are firmly attached. I checked them from the battery to the starter and came up with nothing. Can it possibly be the ignition switch?

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but you're sure the battery from your dad's truck was in a good state of charge?

Hmm. I guess it's in principle possible that the ignition switch would make a connection strong enough to make the starter solenoid click but not strong enough to make the solenoid contacts close. It doesn't seem likely to me, but you could test it by getting a long piece of hookup wire -- I'd use 14 gauge -- and putting a 1/4" quick-disconnect on one end and connecting it to the starter instead of the little wire from the car's harness. Then, stand back with the car out of gear and try touching the other end of the wire to the positive terminal of the battery. If the starter engages then the problem is in the wiring harness or ignition switch.

This exact issue happened to my t leg two years ago. It was the ignition switch.

I replaced the ignition switch about 8 months ago.

Hm.

Then battery cables themselves maybe? Is it possible one of them isn't in great shape? I don't know what else to say.

Didja try the test I suggested?
