Finally! The Dream of Dreams - EJ22T

Post by evolutionmovement »

Picked up my new (well, 86K mi) engine from Maine yesterday. Back still hurts from getting it out of the wagon to where I could use the crane to lift it into the kitchen. It was worth it. What a thing of beauty! Can't wait to get started on it.

The kitchen?? You can't be married

Way cool! Is your wagon a 90? Are you going to make another 90 5MT turbo wagon? ;)

Yes, it's going to be a 5MT 90 L wagon with no obvious outside changes. I'm thinking of using an AWIC so I don't need a scoop either. Someday, ricers, when you least expect it...

Perfect idea, Steve! I just love the idea of having a Legacy appear to be a basic L on the outside, completely unable to tell there's an EJ22T sitting under the hood!!! 8)

Not that it's easy lifting, but EJ-series engines are all aluminum, which helps...

I'd guess about half that, without fluids. I've lifted an EJ18 myself, and I'm not really in very good shape.

wouldnt an ej 18 shortblock be heavier than a ej22t shortblock? By only a few ounces of course...

Why would it be heavier? More piston material?

I was lifting an engine assembly, not a short block. It was the long block plus some accessories (alternator, P/S pump, intake manifold, A/C compressor, etc).

OT, but engines aren't that hard to pick up. Remember, I work in a parts department in a Yota dealer. I frequently pick up 4cyl short blocks, and everyone thinks I'm Hercules for doing it. The saying "use your legs, not your back" is 100% true. I have moved two engines, one right after the other, without even feeling tired...

I had a friend help me carry it to the steps. I'd say it weighs a little over 250 lbs with the turbo attached. Turbo seems good, too.

Old thread back to life, I can comment on the weights of an EJ22 engine. Im fairly certain that a 4eat is quite a bit heavier than the engine itself. I was able to lift the engine, the transmission was REALLY heavy compared to it.

I agree with this 100% The ej22t is easy enough to carry around, a 4eat otoh is like a brick of lead.

I was expecting my new 5mt to be somewhat lighter than the 4eat, and it is by a whole hell of a lot. Carried that sucker into the garage like nothing ;)

Finally got an impact wrench and got the heads off. All crosshatching visible in the cylinders, no discernable wear on the cams or rockers, and the valves and seals even seem nearly new.

damonmlime - sounds like you're getting a real steal. I paid $750 with turbo, but no accessories or crossmember and the ECU was sold already. Up here, though, these engines aren't easy to get. I had to drive over 3 hrs. for this one. I have no complaints, though, everything seems almost brand new.

thawa - I have no idea what happened to the car, I would assume a wreck. They strip cars and put the parts in big steel warehouse buildings on shelves. I don't know what happens to the whole cars, but I don't want to think about it. Junkyards make me sad as it is. The place is called Aable Auto Parts. They're in Maine.

I was thinking about going stock with some piggybacks just to get it in there as a start, but now I'm not sure. It would depend on money, patience, and availability of something with good base maps already. I don't know of any place around here to tune it so I need something that's user friendly. Looks like I may have to do it myself and I have no access to a dyno.

It will work pretty good with the stock NA ECU. Thats basicly the same set up I,m running in my Loyal. I just have the wastgate valve running right back to mannifold pressure so it runs about 7 to 10 psi depending on how hard I get on it. The only difference is that I'm running an NA block with all the turbo stuff on it, so I have a higher compression ratio. I run on 93 octane and the only time I get pinging is high RPM (6,000), high boost (10psi). You should even be better off with the lower compression, all you have to do is swap the wireing harness off your NA intake and put it on the Turbo intake, and swap the NA injectors into the turbo intake. This will get you on the road and flying with your new turbo power, then later as time and money permits you can get some piggy backs and start tuneing. :D
