wrx tranny swap

Post by __TT__ »

I'm DONE with my tleggy 5mt. 1800 into it and it slips into 1st for no reason leaving me to pull it apart to shift it out.

anyways after a lot of searching I need info from someone whos actually done the swap. I need to know if I get a wrx tranny with 3.90. can I just swap my tleg 5mt tailhousing to match the stock 3.90 rear dif? also if I do that will i need to change the driveshaft?

There's no WRX tranny with a 3.9 final drive without a 1.1:1 reducer to the rear, I think that's what you meant?. If you were to find a WRX one, just get the rear DIFF at the same time, that would be easier than taking apart both trannys to keep your rear diff. 2002-2007 US WRX's all got VLSD rear ends.

I haven't done the exact swap you're talking about, however I have a JDM WRX tranny (with a 4.11 final drive), I reused the manual driveshaft, and the mechanical speedo cable from the SS plugs in. I think the cases where you need to worry about the driveshaft is 5mt to 6mt, or auto to manual.

I do know that the front gearing on a wrx tranny is 3.9 and the tailshaft is 1.1.1 reducer and the rear diff is 3.54 or something like that. but I should be able to put my tailshaft reducer from my tranny and put it on the wrx to be able to keep using my 3.90 rear end. But again I need someone who has done this swap.

The only reason I would see you not being able to use your current reduction transfer gears is if they changed over the years. But I don't have experience to tell you whether that can be done.
