Ignition Coil

Post by stant093 »

I recieved an email from a guy on ebay saying that i should state if the two coils i have FA came from a 4eat or a 5mt cause theres a difference....Is this true?

I have a 5mt Diamond coil pack on my 4eat and it runs fine...is this guy just trying to blow steam up my ass or speaking truth??

Subaru put four different types of coil packs on first-generation Legacies, and the divisions were not based just on transmission:

22433AA230
made by Hitachi
90-93 4EAT, 92-93 5MT turbo, early 94 4EAT, early 94 turbo

22433AA360
made by Hitachi
late 94 4EAT, late 94 turbo

22433AA240
made by Diamond, part F-569
superceded by 22433AA370 (below)
all 90-91 5MT, 92-93 5MT non-turbo, early 94 5MT non-turbo

22433AA370
made by Diamond, part F-569
supercedes 22433AA240 (above)
late 94 5MT non-turbo

The packs are all mostly interchangeable; the Diamond packs have a slightly higher turns ratio so they can give you a bit stronger spark. But any of the four will work.

Tristan begs to differ.

Yeap. The coilpacks are different between 5MT and 4EAT, as well as turbo and NA for our generations. The diamonds have more power, period. It could be, that since you've taken your diamond unit apart (for what reason?) it may not function in the way it was designed, and is now defective. (I took apart the car...not the coil)

The MAFs are functionally the same. The difference would be in model years, from what I understand. I ran into this issue with my engine swap, however, I've got it on good word that the black plastic will perform just as well, although the metal MAF would work, if you're so inclined.

The coil worked great on my 4EAT but made my 5MT run like shit. Strange aye. I don't want to say that it is the coil because I bought it from vrg3.

Well, we're all right.

There are two different coil pack manufacturers and two different part numbers for each manufacturer, and among non-turbo models the lines were drawn by transmission.

And it's true that the Diamond packs have the potential for a stronger spark, though it's questionable whether that can make a difference on a naturally aspirated engine.

What's this about taking a coil pack apart?

I don't see how a functional coil pack could work well on one car and work badly on another... The one I sent you worked fine on both my 5MT turbo and my friend's 5MT non-turbo. Is it possible there was a problem with the wiring or ignitor on your 5MT?

I never took the coil apart, Tristan misunderstood me. I took the car apart.

My 5MT has new plugs and wires and worked great with the OEM coil so I figured I would put the Diamond in it. I drove it around for a day and it was sputtering and acting real crappy. I put the OEM back in and it was back to normal.

Weird...

If you put the diamond in and it didn't work, it's probably because it's bad.

I've been running a diamond coil pack on my car (which originally came with a hitachi) for about 3 years now.

Crap. That sucks. I only had it for a few months. Oh well...guess I will try and find another one.

Guess this clears it up. Now I can break the news to Tristan.

The parts guide does include turbos where it says that 90-91 4EATs had 22433AA230 and 90-91 5MTs had 22433AA240.

For the record, my car is a 91 turbo, 5mt, and it came with a hitachi coil pack.

Yeah, I didn't think any turbos had Diamond packs... Must be an error in the book.

Yes, better spark/ignition should help fuel consumption and emissions.
