output shaft ratios; 1.1:1 vs 1:1 and center diffs

Post by x340psi »

I recently swapped the transmission in my 91 Legacy Turbo for that of an 01 WRX. Prior to the purchase I was unaware of the 1.1:1 ratio that I believe is due to the output shaft gears between that and the center diff. Please correct me if my assumption is wrong. I was planning on switching the center diffs. from my Legacy trans until I came into a problem with the output shaft being shorter in the WRX trasmission, thus not allowing proper clearance for the center diff. of my Legacy. I though of swapping the entire rear output shaft case along with the center diff from the Legacy, however I believe there will be clearance issues because of the longer shaft, and the use of tapered roller bearings in the WRX trans. I am inquiring about what kinds of options I have from this point. Could internals, ie. output shaft and gear(s) from a 2.5RS, or another "1:1 trans" car work? Does anyone have trans parts for sale?
Regards,
Eric

Maybe you could find a used 3.545 rear differential, either from a WRX or an SVX? I don't know how hard it would be to make them fit.

solution...

I sent an email to Rallispec and they informed that the necessary transfer shafts/gears can be had for $203. Hopefully this will finally end my transmission nightmares. I will update when I finally get it runing again.

Why did you use a WRX transmisison in the first place? It would have been FAR cheaper to find any random legacy/impreza transmission and while it was out install a stronger center differential. Let us know how the gear swap goes!

There aren't too many different driveshaft out there. I suggest measuring from the output to the center bearing and from that to the differential and visit the local subaru parts place to find the correct one. It may be that automatic shaft is the right length from what you describe

I bought a WRX trans under the assumption it was necessary for the trans to be from a car that had a hydraulic clutch. I was not able to find any substantial evidence that any 1:1 5speed would work, and was actually told by a parts locater(I did not buy it through one) that a WRX trans would bolt right in, which it did... I had heard about the supposd 1.1:1 ratio that was through SOME of the WRX trans', but could never find hard numbers. Now I have. Learned the hard way. Of course, my trans is now practically new. Hopefully time for real mods and no trans worries for a LONG time.
