Engine stalls after 'clicking' from underneath the dashboard

Post by kaukas »

Hi,
I hope somebody can help me. My car is a 92 Legacy Station AWD ATM 2.2l. And she runs fine in general, gas mileage is as usual. But during the last days the engine stalls quite often (especially when idling). First I hear a clicking noise (like a relay) from underneath the dashboard and if do not hit the throttle immediately it will stall.
While trying to locate what makes the clicking noise (I guess it comes from the ECU?) I didn't restart the engine immediately, but the ignition was still on. So I realized that the cooling fan got switched on and off periodically. The left (driver's side) in a 2seconds on and 2seconds off rhythm.
Does anybody have any idea what causes the stalling?

Hey my car does the same thing. 94 N/A Wagon. It doesn't cause the car to die but still there is clicking under the steering wheel, glove box, and hood by the fans.

If you turn the heater controls to OFF, it doesn't do it (in my car) so try that while you idle until someone that knows how to fix this can chim in and help us out.

You may be hearing the relay for the fans. Not sure why it would be stalling though.

Sooo, I just want to report what the reason for stalling was.
The contact at the ignition coil for cyl 1 was completely corroded, nice green  the contact on the wire was broken.
yoyo, I should have known better. There is this ole saying: 'Check ignition and fuel first'
That would have saved some time, but anyway the beauty is now running like a song again. 8)

I still don't know why there was the relay clicking before the engine stalled, but perhaps I can solve that mystery in my next life. :-D

Thanks everybody for reading my post and of course for your answers. I really appreciate that there is a forum for the good ole Subarus!
