new front brakes
im upgrading my front brakes. I plan on using EBC green stuff pads, and EBC sport grooved sport brake rotors. im wondering if theres a better rotor. and are there any good after market calipers that anyone knows of?

I would recommend something other then the EBC pads. They tend to "warp" rotors.
As for rotors, I run OEM rotors, they have held up longer then the others I've used.
As for pads, I would check out some of the axxis ultimates or metal masters.
As for upgrades, any calipers for the WRX will fit your legacy with larger wheels, or you could get wrx calipers and rotors. That's what I did.

thanks for the help josh (didnt know the ebc pads were bad on rotors). i want to eventually get some wrx rims, but dont have that kind of money right now. so i guess ill just get some good OE calipers.
something not good, is the front passenger brake has been making excessive amunts of dust. So i finally pulled the wheel off today. And found out that the caliper must be hanging up or something. Because the driver sides pads were fine, but the passengers ones there was hardly any pad left. I slapped some OE pads on for the mean time. And greased the caliper where it was hanging up. Hopefully that will fix the problem, but i will need a new caliper, and rotor soon. So i figure its time to get off my butt, and do the brake upgrade ive been planning on doing. Oh by the way how would i go about cryo treating the new rotors?

I have no trouble with EBC pads, but my rotors are cryogenically treated, so I don't know. I don't do competition, either, but I do a lot of left-foot braking and hauling down from illegal speeds (which doesn't necessarily have to be that high).

You're probably going to pay an arm and a leg for the rotors at frozen rotors.
I definitely recommend cryo-treating, I've seen the benefits first hand on my car. If you want to go that route, check out www.onecryo.com $25 a rotor when i had mine done. You won't find a cheaper price, and the reason they are cheaper then other places is because they do so much volume.

evolutionmovement: do you noticeably shorter stopping distances with the EBC pads? Are yours the green ones? Do they feel or sound any different than other pads?
I read an article about, oh, 6 months ago where different sports cars were tested. One had the green stuff pads on them and they stopped the car in a shorter distance than other cars with expensive and larger brakes. I was thinking of getting them the next time I replace the pads on my Suby but if Josh says it warps rotors then perhaps I need to get my rotors cryo treated. What's the turn-around time in shipping my rotors to get them treated and have it shipped back?

I ordered the rotors frozen from a cryo-freeze company. I can't remember the name now (three years ago), but I found them by Google search. They're not cheap compared to OEM, though, and I only got the fronts (which is all you'll probably need). I think it was about $200.
The pads are the EBC Green Stuff. They definitely stop better, don't squeak, but they may generate a little more dust. The main thing is they seem to bite harder as you hold them down with steady pressure, so there's a big reduction in fading over stock and they're stopping ability increases with temperature (up to a certain point, of course). They stop at least as well as OEM pads when cold, too, so no compromise but for the increased price.

Thanks Steve! That information is much appreciated! I was taught that braking and handling are the two most important mechanical factors in avoiding accidents. A couple of months ago I was entering an intersection going about 50 mph when a young girl on a cellphone pulled out in front of me (about 3 car lengths) to turn right, oblivious to the red light she just ran through. I locked my brakes, saw that I was going to smash into her, glanced over my left shoulder, it was clear, let off some pressure off the brakes to get the tires rolling, then pulled to the left around her. I got so close to her rear end, uh, back of her car, as I swung past her that I don't know I could have tried getting closer to her even if I tried it in a parking lot with her car stopped.
Since you definitely notice the increased stopping power with the Green Stuff, would you be in position to comment on a comparison -- stock size cryo treated rotors on 93 Legacy with Green Stuff pads versus same car but with WRX calipers and rotors with Axxis pads?

I only have the stock brakes with the EBC and have no experience with the WRX brakes, so I couldn't tell you. I have an ex-girlfriend in Florida who has a WRX (my influence demonstrating rally slides in the Legacy, I'm proud to say), but i don't think that'll help. At some point I'll be upgrading my brakes since I'm putting a turbo motor in, but don't hold your breath for that. I'm unemployed and just bought the motor because it was such a good deal, so it'll be a while...

I'm going off of what other people have said about the ebc pads....I have no personal experience with them.....so take my recommendation to stay away from them with a grain of salt.
The cryo-treatment process......without going into too much detail....what it does is actually change the grain structure of the cast metal to a stronger metal. The process is essentually a very precisely controlled quenching and annealing process. As for my personal experience. The rotors have not devolped the normal grooves that the WRX peeps normally see, and I'm not running the nicest rotor friendly pads either (mintex 1155) Also, the improved strength helps resist against disc thickness variations or more commonly & incorrectly called "warping"
Cost, I paid for rotors, around 75 bucks (keep in mind I got slotted rotors which were more)....had them shipped directly to www.onecryo.com , cost of treatment was 25 bucks per rotor, and paid from shipping back.....so with shipping I was probably around 125 or something for each rotor......if you can get rotors cheaper then 75, then your costs go down.

legacy777: thanks for those details about cryo-treatment. I enjoy learning specifics about things to get a better understanding of how and why things work. From your description of how well your rotors have stood up, I'm going to seriously look into cryo-treated rotors on my next brake job. Thanks, too, for the reference to onecryo.com. Very much appreciated!
