Boosting lower than normal..

Post by LookAsubie »

Hey guys, Ill just make this story short.

I've been running at about 10 psi for a long time now.
Went and mobbed around on the beach for a little while and after that im only hitting 5-7 psi.
I figured something came loose or maybe my air filter was a little clogged.
Took off air filter and cleaned it out, searched for loose hoses/leaks, didnt find anything. Went and drove the car, still only 5-7 psi.

I turned up my boost controller a little bit to see if it would change anything and its still only hitting 5-7 psi.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

You may want to check your wastegate actuator.

Just looked at it/messed around with it.. not exactly sure what i should be looking for but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Took off my top mount, looked in the throttle body and it looks pretty clean..

What else should i look at?

Is it in limp mode? Have you trying pulling codes from the ECU?

Check the ECU for codes, there still may be some stored.

is it like its just running low boost, or more like a boost leak, boosts then drops? I was having a similar issue and my BPV was leaking horribly. Never expected it though since i just changed to the metal supra one. Anyways, just an idea. take it off and blow through it and see if there is any resistance while plugging the vac line hose.

It boosts smoothly and stuff it just boosts lower than normal. if im WOT all the way through the gear it will barely hit 6-7 psi. But most of the time its hang around 5 psi.

I will check that out.

yea that kinda sounds like what mine was doing when mine was leaking. O boy was I stoked when I got that fixed, my car ripped. i actually remember having my MBC turned WAY up, and it wouldn't boost anymore than the 6 or w/e

The BPV isnt the problem. checked it out and it holds air just fine. Put on a BOV i have just to see if it would boost higher and it was the same.

Really getting annoyed with my car lately, the boost problem, and now in the last 2 weeks i have a whole bunch of annoying rattle and clunking sounds  Frustrating!

Figured it out last night, my perrin manual boost controller was like clogged or stuck or something idk. I took it off and screwed it all the way in and out a few times and put it back on, shes good to go now. Feels so much better than the 5 psi :)

I am also having a similar problem. I swapped the EJ22t into my non turbo 93 wagon this summer with some add ons such as; front mount intercooler with 2.5" pipes, 3" downpipe and 3" exhuast with no cat or muffler, walbro 255lph fuel pump, turboxs blow off valve, intake with cone filter, Stg II solid disc clutch, and turboxs mbc (not installed). My first start up went great, the car ran perfect, no problems. I kept the stock boost solenoid installed until I broke the clutch in and was comfortable with how it ran. Once I hit 500 mi on the clutch I couldn't help playing aroung a little. Well, when I get on it, once I get to 4200 rpms I hit 7 lbs of boost and no more. It also acts as it doesn't want to go any higher in rpms. I feels as I am getting a lack of fuel. I haven't had any CELs, I even plugged in the check connectors and no codes flash. I then tried my mbc and same thing happens; no higher than 7 lbs. I am stuck. I checked all my intercooler piping for leaks, vaccum leaks, and can't figure it out.

What ECU are you running? Are you running the turbo Legacy ECU? Did you swap the MAF sensor to the aluminum MAF?

yeah i'm using all the turbo specific sensors & the 694 ecu. It runs great until i get into high rpms, it just won't boost more than 6 pounds. I have been fiddling with it a litte everyday & think it is the wastewater actuator. when i rev it at a standstill, it sounds like i'm getting exhaust back flow. I'm doing a clutch job for someone this weekend so i'll have some money to upgrade to a td04.

I've noticed several posts within the past couple months with similar symptoms. I don't know if anyone pin pointed the problem. I stuck open wastegate might cause this. Or possibly a leaking bypass valve.

This morning i drove my wife to work, was coming back on the freeway, in 5th accelerated to 70, and wouldn't boost past 2lbs. Then my cel lit up which i was actually happy about so i could get some insight on what the hell is going on. So, when i got home i plugged in the diagnostic connectors and the cel wouldn't blink a code, it just dimmed and brightened along with the other idiot lights. I could also here a relay clicking in rythm with the lights which was most likely for the fans cuz they were going on and off also. So i'm not sure whats going on, maybe wiring or the ecu. I did buy it from an out of state junk yard and had it shipped. So wtf?

I figured out the cel thing, whoever owned the car before me had rigged up a switch and connector for using multi meter or something. So, i bypassed all that and am getting a code 32 & 49. So, i'm going to replace the 02 sensor, check and clean the MAF. I am using the turbo aluminum MAF before anyone asks.
