auxiliary input

Anyone know of a way to wire up an auxiliary input to my stock 93 legacy tape/radio, so I can connect an iPod without the cassette adapter?

If not, any advice on a relatively cheap unit, with an aux/in to replace the factory unit with minimum hassle?

on some of the radios in the 90-94s had a aux in the front if you dont have that i supose you could get sum fm mod.

vrg3, I just looked at your sight, and....<laughing> I can't belive you programmed an assembly program to run your super NES controller through your computer. How old were you when you did that?? In college, or have you been into assembly since high school?

Any chance of simple instructions how to rig an aux input to that DIN connector you show?

Ryan - That was in high school... My "ultra old-sk00l" page was from 10th or 11th grade; can't remember now. That email address doesn't even work anymore. The page is there for posterity's sake mostly. I got into x86 assembly in 8th grade when I started democoding. Now I'm actually using it again for the Select Monitor hacking I'm doing. :)

mreks - I assume the iPod has a 3.5mm jack on it (like for headphones)?

If so, what you need is a 3.5mm stereo plug:

And a 13-pin DIN connector that fits the jack on the back of the stereo, and a switch that you can fit somewhere on your dash.

Wire one side of the switch to an accessory +12v line (like your cigarette lighter or pin 1 of the radio's 7-pin connector) and the other side to the "TRG" pin of the DIN connector. Then wire the "ground" contact of the 3.5mm connector to the "COM" pin of the DIN connector, and the "R" and "L" contacts to their respective counterparts.

You can then find a place to run the cord with the 3.5mm connector at the end out through the dash. In my girlfriend's car I just had it come out beside the stereo. It's a little pinched but it's not too bad.

Then, when you hit the switch, the head unit should go into "external input" mode and amplify the sound coming through that jack.

Let me note (I should add this to that page too) that I did this reverse-engineering on a Panasonic head unit, and so it's possible that it's different for Clarion radios.

So, I can I wire in the aux to the DIN in the back AND the stock CD player?

Another option, can I get a newer CD deck that hooks up to the DIN that can play MP3 RW disc.

I don't know if you can wire two sources in at the same time. I guess it depends on how their output stage circuits work. It's probably safer not to.

You can connect any newer CD deck to the stock deck's DIN connector as long as it has line-level outputs. Or even if it doesn't, you could use a line-level converter or something. You'd lose some sound quality but running through the stock head unit isn't gonna get you great sound anyway.

Why do you want to keep the stock head unit? For the tape player? Cuz you might be better off using a line level converter to connect the stock head unit to an aftermarket head unit's aux in instead of the other way around. I did that before.

i dont mind the stock head unit sounds good enough for me. More input options would be nice. Ill look around for a cd deck instead i think.
