Torque bind options?

Picked up a 95 Impreza,it has torque bind,but it's such a nice car and the price was good.

So I'm wondering what I should do first to try and alleviate the problem.

Any advice?

I'm assuming it's an automatic?

First off, put a set of four matching tires on it and see if it goes away.

If you actually want to fix it and have working AWD, you'd need to remove the transfer case off the transmission and replace at least the clutch packs, and perhaps the Duty C solenoid as well.

Otherwise, just stick a fuse in the FWD slot under the hood by the passenger strut tower. You won't have AWD, but the torque bind will go away.

Check the fluid, and really, I'd suggest replacing it.

You can test whether the duty c solenoid is working by putting a fuse in the FWD fuse holder. If it goes away, at least you know the solenoid works, and the problem is likely the clutch packs. New fluid may help a little bit, and may improve over time.

BEWARE - I had the same problem w/a '95 Legacy 4EAT - torque bind. Took it in and they flushed it and torque bind was gone...so was REVERSE!

So, I suggest REPLACING the trans fluid - not a flush if this car has over 100k. Why? Because all the seals are nice and sealed w/15 years worth of fluid deposits. Just drain and refill the fluid 3x, w/a shift thru the gears between each cycle, to get most of the fluid replaced.

Then go drive in figure 8's in a parking lot and see if it goes away.

Go over and read up on 'torque bind' on the USMB site...lots of info....and instructions on how to fix the rear clutch packs, if necessary (you don't have to remove the trans to do this job).

One last thing to note....check your tire pressure. Make sure you're running the correct tire pressure.
