My son has a 96 when his wife was driving she drove into the driveway and when she came back out to start it it wouldn't turn over. She says running fine when she pulled in. The engine will only turn a few degrees each way before hitting something solid. Now i have removed the timing belt still the same, plus the timing looked good before taking off. I had to guess on timing since engine wouldn't turn over.I figure that I'll have to remove the engine but how do I get torque converter off? even when I have the engine out with tc connected if I can't turn the engine how do I get it off? any ideas what is wrong with the engine? I'm thinking rod or broken piston.

forgot to mention that it is a 2.5
Re: removing torque converter
There is an access hole on the engine bell housing that you will have to use to get at the bolts attaching the flex plate to the torque converter.

From your description it almost sounds like the flex plate may be broken.

Re: removing torque converter
Josh, I know that there is an access hole to get to the bolts but the problem is that the engine won't turn over so that I can get to the bolts. I have pulled the engine with the torque converter attached to the flex plate. When turning the engine over is has a hard clunk in both directions. Even with the engine out I can't get to the tc bolts. I have the spark plugs out and looked into the cylinder and could not see any broken pistons. Looks like this is probably a rod then. If that is the case probably looking at a new engine.
Re: removing torque converter
Yeah....I had a brain fart on that one.....if you can't rotate the engine, the access hole won't do you much good.
It does sound like something is fubard in the engine. You could try taking the oil pan off and see if you can determine the cause.

Re: removing torque converter
Haven't had a chance to pull the pan yet. Had my granddaughter's first birthday and didn't get home till late. I'll pull it off tonight. Thanks Josh
Re: removing torque converter
Found problem with the engine, broken piston. I could say a few choice words but it won't help. Need to find another engine.
