Strange vibrating sound when I accelerate.

Post by kimokalihi »

I've got a 5spd legacy (forester 4.444 engine+trans) and when I start from a stop and accelerate there's an odd vibrating noise or rattling noise that is quite audible. It sounds like a couple washers on a shaft that are too big to fit snugly on the shaft and they bounce around until I get up some speed.

Any idea what this noise could be? I swear I hear it in my metro in the last month or so now too. Not as loud but it never used to make that sound.

Is it just a noise or is it also a vibration?

It could be the speedometer cable you're hearing. They tend to get noisey when the temperature drops.

I don't think it's the speedo cable, that's brand new. It's a noise I guess, I can't remember if you can feel it.

You might check your lug nuts and if you have wheelcovers you might have something floating around in them until you get some speed up.

Nope lug nuts are fine. No wheel covers. It sounds like it's coming from the transmission or maybe pitch mount area.

The drive shaft have any wobble in the knuckles? Mine made a weird vibration/noise when one was going out at city speeds.

Dunno. I don't think anything was loose in the driveshaft. That would sound like it's coming from behind me, don't you think? This sounds like it's coming from the middle to the front of the transmission through the firewall or the floor boards right by the firewall.
