Legacy VS. Deer!

Post by subafreak »

Yesterday was not a good day.
first my wife calls me at 5am to tell me she just hit a deer on the way to work destroying the right front head and marker light, folding the hood up 4inches and pushing the radiator support almost in to the motor. Luckly it didn't break the radiator so she could still drive it to work.
Now breath easy, this was on the beater car, the 90 wagon so I wasn't that upset. (like I was when she dented my SVX or when she crushed the fender on the Turbo on the side of the car port or when she backed into a rock and scratched the brand new WRX wheels that I got on the turbo.)
In other words I've been waiting for this to happen ever since I took the nice cars away from her and stuck her in the Beater.
But wait, there's more!
So after work she comes home and gets the Loyal that I have only had back on the road for one week, and then gos out to pick the kids up and gets pulled over. As it turns out she FORGOT to renew the registration. So now I'm stuck at work and she has to either leave the car where it is or pay to get it towed somewhere. Now I'm getting mad :x . SHe ends up leaving the car and just going back for it and driving home later ( very ballzy) So now I have one unregistered car and one with only one headlight.
So i'll be buzy this weekend giving the Beater a whole new look and maybe add a deer bar to the front of it.

Oh yeah, and I have a freaking cold.

I'm all done bitching now, just thought I'd try to make anyone here feel better about there day.

90 Legacy wagon (Beater)
92 Loyal monster wagon (EJ22) and 30" tires.
78 BRAT (EJ22T comming)

I blow s@#t up.

Well, look on the bright side, now you have an excuse to get jdm lights/and bumper shipped to the states :D or at least put a turbo bumper on there for looks (assuming the bumper is damaged, which I'm not really thinking you are hoping it is, so maybe I should stop trying to jynx you?) At anyrate, good luck with all this stuff, and sorry it had to happen all at once.

A deer hit my brother's Legacy last fall, and it did very little damage. It put a small dent in the hood, and other minor damage.

I'm sorry to hear that, subafreak.

A couple years ago, when I still had my Impreza, I was driving up a lonely upstate New York road at around 11:00pm and saw this white mass appear on the right side of the road. I instinctively swerved away from it while braking hard but it was running at me and pushed me into a skid. When I came to a stop off the road, I called the police and told them, "Uh... I think I hit... I dunno, a cow or something? It was white."

Turned out to be a white deer. It left a huge deer-shaped dent in the passenger door. I was afraid the car was totaled, but Mark Mann in Trumansburg (great Subaru guy if anyone's in the area) did an incredible job fixing it up. I've been really scared about deer since though.

Do you have comprehensive insurance? If you do it should cover the damage to the Legacy. It's lucky that the radiator didn't contact the engine; if it had applied shear stress to the crank pulley it could mean an early death for the motor. If the insurance company will give you enough money for a new headlight, hood, bumper, etc you might be able to take the opportunity to upgrade some stuff. Get parts from a junkyard and use the leftover money elsewhere.

that's a nice pic vrg3 :)

I've got an interesting deer story too......was driving up to toronto from state college, PA to visist a friend up there. On the way back I was just driving into the main drag into town and out of the corner of my eye, I just barely see this deer. I swerved to the left, and in all honesty.....I don't know how the thing didn't run into the car.....scared the crap out of me.

My uncle had a similar situation....a bunch of deer were crossing the road. he stopped, and waited for them all to go by. When he thought it was clear, he slowly started to creep forward and out comes another one and runs right into the fender.......dumb deer.....

I have found that blasting my horn when I see deer often makes them run away. With your horns, Josh, I'd imagine it would be even more effective.

Deer don't have depth perception, right? So they never understand how fast and how close these big hunks of metal are until they actually collide with one. But they do have directional hearing and can tell that a loud unidirectional sound must be nearby.

Supertones normally run around $80. The 123 had an option from the factory for a rally air horn, didn't it?

Believe it or not...
I've actually had luck with the deer whistles, the kind that are kinda squarish and have two units, with different tone whistles. I used to live in western mass, in the berkshires, and its all rich peoples 18 bedroom "summer cottages" with posted property...and no hunters, so the deer are like rats. We used to go to this all night truck stop every night to eat and study and pound coffee down. Almost every night I would have to lock em up avoiding deer...a very large percentage of my friends had deer collisions on this 15 mile stretch of road over a couple years. Anyways, I never had to panic stop again after installing them. Its possible that the speeds were just right, 35mph limit, so fast enough for the whistles to work, and slow enough too, but I made a practice of doubling the speed limit the entire way, and still didn't have problems. I've often wondered about the electric ones...

Huh... that's interesting. The only things I've ever heard before about those whistles was that they were snake oil. But they seemed to work for you? I don't know how well-informed the naysayers were, or whether some brands work more than others... Which ones in particular do you use? It seems like there's not much to lose by trying them.

Well, I just got a new set for my GT...they looked like the same as the ones I used to have, although different package and such, I got them at walmart I think...ehhw. I'll check em out later, as they are in the backseat of my car, and I am lazy. I too have heard them called snakeoil...and I did play a snake oil salesman, silias scavenger, in a middle school play. Perhaps it is the type of whistle...
My experience was that the Deer seemed to look up earlier with the whistles, I thought maybe they caused the deer to look up early enough that they aren't blinded/stunned by the headlights, and so can get out of your way, or not get in it at all. Anyways, I was pretty surprised when they seemed to work, and it seemed like a pretty dramatic difference too.

That's rough about the deer, man. I had a friend that was driving home and a deer charged his car. He lowered his head and ran smack into the side of his 2001 Jetta. The passenger thought he was going to die because the antlers were going right for him. What happened was nothing short of a miracle because he got his antler clipped on the side view mirror which swung him sideways and he bent the rear fender in so that it was thinner than the tire. The deer was fine and also owned a new side view mirror. My friend came out fuming and cussing because his car was just turned into sandwich spread, all in all everything turned out ok, a few grand later.

Do we have reliable data on what frequencies deer can hear? We wouldn't need a wind tunnel, since we could just mount them on a car and drive. :)

I think Scott was saying 90-91 headlights were "better" because they are too dim to freeze deer. :)

And to top off my week I got a speeding ticket this morning for doing only 80 on the highway! Whats up with that?

Anyway thanks for the consern about my beater vrg3 but it is only the beater. I payed $200 for the thing so it definitly doesn't have full coverage. It will survive anyway and it's getting lifted this weekend for a whole new look. I'v only hit one deer at only like 25mph under a highway overpass! What the hell is a deer doing in the middle of a highway underpass? I was in another Loyal I used to have and I sent the basterd flying like 50 feet and only broke my grill and misaliged a headlight but I deer blood and over my fender.

My wife is definitlly scary to drive with. I went for test drive with her in a WRX and damn neer ripped of the Jesus bar I was holding on so tight. Then again I don't like being a passenger in anyones car, I have been in too many accidents with other people behined the wheel.

BTW Becouse I'm a retard and cant figure out how to post pictures here, if you want to check out my rides like the Beater or the Monster Loyal you can hop over to www.subaru-svx.com and look in my locker, I'm Subafreak over there too. I'll post some Legacy carnage picks and engine bay shots of the EJ22T Loyal there soon. I'll also try to figure out how to post a pick in here someday :D

I don't believe the W123's had a factory option for a rally air horn, or at least not in the U.S., it might be a dealer installed option. I remeber seeing a site a while back that was Sells Hella Eurolights for very cheap, and I remember they had Suppertones for less than $60, I wish I can find it again...

Oh yeah, I was thinking of German models... When we originally bought my old 123 my dad got to pick all the options. Technically he picked it up from the factory in Stuttgart. The rally horn button fit in the center console, among the other various switches.

I just filled the unused space in the engine bay and wheel wells with various types of horns... that car had like a dozen horns; it was quite loud. :D
