Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
So today when I was driving away in my car from the parking spot I noticed a black spot on the ground thought nothing of it. As i drove away from running errands I saw the same spot and knew i had a leak of some sort. Turns out I am leaking gas, and no not from the filler neck i had that issue in my wagon. Although most of our legacies are plauged with the leak on the filler neck due to the plastic covering up the bottom of the metal and allowing it to rust out i saved myself the trouble by cutting the plastic down and undercoating the crap out of that filler neck. Driving around on a half full tank makes for very short trips. But this time I am leaking from the drivers side and after looking underneath the fuel return line and feed lines are rusted out to the point where they crumbled in my hand. Luckily i dont have to replace the whole line going all the way to the fuel filter. Why because the fuel lines underneath the car and the ones on the fuel tank are seperated by rubber hoses. Thank GOD SOA did it that way. I dont want to buy new fuel lines but I need to replace them. along with the hoses to stop this leak before it gets to big to where my fuel pump is dumping fuel onto the street.
Now for my question
Are the fuel lines that are by the fuel tank interchangable between the subarus?
Is this replacment posibble with the fuel tank still in the car?
I hope this can help someone along the way when they have the same problem

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
Well I answered my second question by myself I do need to drop the whole rear end of the car to get to those damm lines there is no other way around it. As for the first question I am still open to suggestions. I am going to the local pick n pull to see what is going to be around and hopefully i can scavenge some fuel lines from a legacy that are hopefully not rusted out.
My guess is there will be something that I can get to work
My second guess its going to be a pain in the ass to get out twice once at the junkyard once at home.
My third guess is that there will be a lot of broken stripped out bolts in my chassis when I start taking things off.
Or maybee not since my car is undercoated but time will tell.

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
I'm not sure for sure if the lines are all the same. I would venture to say all the first gen legacies are the same. The newer subies should probably be similar enough that you could get them to work.

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
I went to the junkyard today and I got two sets of fuel lines
The process of taking them out was fairly simple
I used a 14mm 17mm and 12mm sockets to drop the suspension and tank. I did have to cut the rubber lines for the filler neck, and the fuel lines, and the brake lines to get everything to a point where i could snag the fuel lines.
One is out of a 1995 AWD legacy wagon
The other is out of a 1990 FWD Legacy Wagon
I will try and post pics up of both and one of what is in my car curently when i get it out
The two seem very similar with the one line being shorter on the FWD.
Just as a refrence
We have a supply line for fuel
A return line for fuel
what is the third line for ?

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
The third line is for the charcoal canister and evaporative emissions. Here's some pics of the AWD fuel lines.

I don't think you'll be able to use the FWD fuel lines alone. They don't have the extra line for the jet pump on the driver's side. However, you can probably swap those specific lines from the 95 legacy or your own legacy, if they're still good and make one good "set".
Once you drop the fuel tank on your car, you'll know what will fit and whether you should reuse any of the old lines going to the jet pump.

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
Okay here it is the pictures as I removed the tank and fixed the lines. I also broke one line which was my luck thats how I found more rusty gold but I did not get any pictures of it.

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
About how long did it take to get the tank out? I'm going to be replacing my tank soon and an estimate of time would be great, especially since I'll be doing it outside on pavement and hopefully with some air tools, if needed.

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
I did this by myself in a crammed garage because it was cold in one full day about 18 hours the part that was the worst by myself was getting the tank back in and bolting up thankfully mine was nearly empty. Prepare to spend a whole day underneath the car. The air tools might be helpful but don't strip anything like I did.
What tank are you using ?
Also make a mental reference or like me take pictures of how the lines go together as I reversed mine the first time.

Re: Fuel Tank and Fuel lines Thread of Help
I'll be taking out the dented stock one for a junkyard replacement in hopes of fixing the crazy gas gauge, amd it seems I'm also lucky because the underside of my car isn't rusted much if at all so hopefully everything will go without a hitch.
