2wd to awd swap=duty c soleniod

Post by justin the subie »

what ive done is turn a 90 2wd legacy into an all wheel drive.. this is honestly the 3rd trans ive tried! no joke! the time ive spend reading the fourm ive come up with the possiblity of no signal to the duty c..

need help with this one!!!

the first trans i put in worked perfect as well, just had same problem as this one.. binding on pavement, lunging after shut off, power light flashing same code.. but i kept driving it that way till the trans started slipping..

power light flashes 16 times on start, and feels like im driving my truck all locked up in 4wd..

runs n drives killer other than that!

so what are my options?
get a awd wire harness under the dash?
can i just run a couple of wires to the tcu?
should i set up the center diff lock switch while im at it?

anyone got picture and or wire colors for the duty c solenoid?

Check the codes....look on here for the method....not sure if it'll be accurate w/the swap you did???

You're running the AWD TCU, correct?

Legacy777 likely has the TCU wiring info on his website.....hopefully he'll add to this.

And you have the correct REAR diff for the transmission ('90-91 are different than '92-94)?

heres what happen.. i needed a good trans and i wanted to test it!! so i bought a 92 awd.. run and drove just fine! no binding no codes no problem!

took trans, rear end, tcu, and carefully installed it into this 2wd model..

ive looked over everything on this and have been playing around with it for a long time.

since it had no problems in one car i don't see why it wouldn't work in this car..

its just gotta be a wire, possibly to the rear vss, or to the solenoid..

any help with 2wd to awd trans differences? maybe 2wd trans only has one vss?? maybe 2wd trans has duty c solenoid grounded??

Duty C controls the rear clutches for AWD, so likely the wires aren't there in the trans harness?? So, running them from the AT's harness to the TCU 'should' work?

Did the FWD have the rear VSS connector, too? If not, that is also probably needed for your swap.

THIS LINK from the USMB may help w/the wiring...pics are gone, but info is there.

Email Legacy777 about the TCU wiring...or search on here....seems I've seen a schematic??

figured it out.. just a few of wires between the trans and tcu, one is white/black, the other is the grey 3 conducter wire, white and sleeve go to black/yellow located near tcu.. and the black one goes to the tcu as well..

runs perfect now! :smt033

This may sound like a dumb question, but did you swap in the AWD front differential so it matches the rear diff final drive ratio?

Based on your last post, I'm assuming you just ran the proper wiring from the trans's duty c solenoid to the TCU?
