I have a 93 turbo wagon 4EAT with a bunch of mods. I want to install a switch on my dash that will put the TCU into full time "Power Mode". I have read a few threads on using the manual switch for the same purpose but I can't quite figure out why the manual switch is used.
It seems that I need to ground out a certain pin on the TCU to engage the Power Mode but I'm not sure which one.
I am mostly looking to lock up my torque converter for 50/50 distribution. I am getting a lot of understeer in lower traction situations unless I am WOT.
I think you may have a slight misunderstanding of the terms or technology.
Power mode primarily affects the transmission's shift patterns. It may alter the AWD maps slightly, but I wouldn't rely on it to give you 50/50 torque split.
The manual mode/button is just a primitive form of traction control and keeps the car from going into 1st gear. I seem to recall that putting the transmission in manual mode (which only works with the gear selector in the 2 or 3 position) may change the AWD maps to give you a more 50/50 torque split. I would suggest trying that first before you mess with anything else.
If you find that the manual mode doesn't do what you want, what you would need to do is modify/intercept the signal going to the duty c solenoid in the transmission to force 50/50 torque split. There's some wear/longevity issues with doing this, but if you search, there's a couple different threads where people go into more details.
As JC states you're referring to 2 different issues/subjects.
Check THIS POST for Power Mode Switch info. I did this and just put a toggle switch between the wire and ground.....I didn't want to mess w/the Manual button.
If you're getting torque steer when you accelerate you may have delayed AWD engagement. I had it on my '90. It's similar to torque bind (search on here and the Library section here) and will require a R&R of the rear output shaft.
If you want a tru 50/50 lock, there may be a post on here, but I know there's a thread on the USMB site detailing how to add this mod. This is a 'locked' center diff and not for use on dry pavement!
