NA block bolted to turbo heads?
can you bolt up ej22t heads to an ej22 non turbo block? or can you put the manifolds and turbo from an ej22t onto an ej22 NA long block? Thanks!

Yes and with a little more work, yes. With the turbo on an N/A, you'll have to tap for the oil and coolant lines and worry about the AFR because of the higher compression. I'm assuming with the first question, that you're looking to turbo an N/A block, but if not, you'll have to cap off the oil and coolant lines for the turbo.

yes, looking to turbo an NA block is the plan. so everything bolts up except oil lines? sounds good to me! maybe ill just run an AFR so it can be less prone to detonating or something but mostly was concerned about the bolting up, and running. if the heads are good, bolting up the heads to the ej22NA would be even better, but at the same time maybe not if it means new head gaskets and everyting, just run like really low (5-7 lbs) boost then? its intercooled and has exhaust

Re: NA block bolted to turbo heads?
The heads are identical (I've had them side to side) with the exception of the FSM saying the (exhaust?) valves are a little smaller on the turbo and the cams lobes obviously have different timing. The N/A heads even have the areas marked off to drill and tap for the oil and coolant lines. IMO, they are the exact same casting with a little different machining operation for the turbo heads, which makes prefect sense from a manufacturing standpoint and Subaru nearly always seemed to take into account how any part could play double duty be it sedan/wagon, fwd/awd, 5MT/4EAT, N/A/turbo to save on cost (hell, they even seemed to consider the use of everything possible over again in subsequent generations and multiple models). Very clever and it allowed them to put more money into making the given part quality instead of having to spend it on building multiple parts. Consider that a boxer engine is more money to make than an inline and it makes it almost a necessity, at least at the time of the design of the 1st generation Legacy.

oh awesome, thanks for the info, extremely helpful!!! I didnt know that much was the same, another genius subaru idea! I still can't believe the amount of great engineering these cars have, so easy to work on, everything makes sense, for the most part, and lasts forever!

The heads from a single engine also appear identical with bolt on parts to drive the cams from one side or the other depending on whether the head is intended for left or right installation, so there was only one head casting design needed for (at least) the two engines. I'd have to take a look at them again to be 100% sure, but I remember it looking like the case.
