Hey guys. I'm going to be picking up a 92 legacy wagon in the next couple of days. Since it has 160k miles, and blown head gaskets, I figured since I'm going to be that deep I figured I might as well rebuild the whole thing.
So, far, my parts lists consists of:
Timing belt kit(belt, water pump, WP gasket, idler pulleys, and tensioner)
Major rebuild kit(pistons, rings, gasket kit) http://www.rpmmachine.com/engine-rebuil ... baru.shtml
Spark plugs
Oil
Coolant
Might as well change the oil in the trans and diffs while I'm redoing the engine...
That sounds about it. Hopefully this motor will go a lot smoother than the last time I did head gaskets. Am I missing anything?
And, should I change the oil pump? Or is there a way to refurbish it myself?

Re: Picking up a 92 Legacy wagon, blown HG's
HI,
Welcome to the BBS.
Is it a NA or Turbo 2.2? I'm guessing NA as you wrote: 'Might as well change the oil in the trans" and the Turbo wagon only came w/the Automatic/4EAT.
Either one is very stout and blowing HG is uncommon on the 2.2, unless abused/neglected. I'd double-check the radiator/T-stat/etc to ensure it's really the HG.
With 'only' 160K I'd be hesitant to rebuild it too....a lot of $$ and time. Unless it ran low on oil or was repeatedly ran hot, the bottom/bearings are likely fine.
And HG aren't as big a PITA on the 2.2 vs. the 2.5...could be done w/out pulling the engine.
IF you do go 'all-out' replace the rear separator/baffle (?) plate as they're prone to leakage. Don't touch the rear main unless it's leaking.
And since I don't know what you know about Subies, I'll suggest OEM on the plugs and wires - @ least.

TD

Re: Picking up a 92 Legacy wagon, blown HG's
It is a 2.2NA with a 4eat. I know ATF goes in there, just used to talking about my STI.
Pretty sure it is the HG's, the last owner changed the Thermostat and the Radiator, which only leaves it to be the HG's.
I will replace that rear separator/baffle, thanks for the heads up about that. I probably wouldn't have thought about it. And for $25, might as well.
I was talking to my buddy about it, he said I should get the heads rebuilt, so, I'll probably do that because there is a knock on the driver's side head. The oil is pretty low in it, and the last owner said his son didn't pay attention to the temp gauge at all, so, I think it is safe to assume the engine isn't in too good of working order... Who knows if the timing belt was ever changed...
So, if the pistons are good, I'll just get new rings, timing belt kit, gasket kit, bearings, ATF, diff oil, oil, spark plugs, wires, and that baffle. Should be about it.
I also will be needing to redo the driver's side seat belt door thing. Someone cut the cable that moves it along the door seal.
We'll see about rehoning the block if the pistons are bad, rebore it if the side walls are bad.
Gotta wait for it to get warm though. Montana spring isn't coming quickly this year...
On the bright side, the AWD works great!
