Turbo Owners- Are your cars loud inside stock?

Post by LegacyT »

I still have stock exhaust on my car, but especialy in first gear when I rev above 3500 it gets so loud inside that I hear pennies rattling in my center console-the car sound really aggressive-I like :D Maybe its because I removed all the tar sound padding from inside the trunk along with the trunk interior, but still it sounds mean, almost like a reving porsche but louder. I have no holes in my exhaust system though. Any you turbo guys cars sound like this?

it's probably a loose/rattling heat shield. It's very very commmon.....I hate the damn things.

Its not a heat shield, I'm just talking about the overall exhaust note penetrating into the cabin, Its freggen loud.

Aww heck, I don't even have a turbo, and no matter how loud I turn up the stereo, I can always hear a familiar low boxer growl through the car, just enough to sound really nice... But if you all think the Legacies are loud, hop in an older EA82 Subie... My XT sounds waaaay better than my Legacy, it really growls! 8)

Haha ya. I remeber when the midpipe on my Loyale let go, just behind the Y-pipe, I drove it like that for a month or so. My friend who lived a mile down the road one day puposely ran out to see what was coming but it was only me and the loyale. He thought it was a custom rod with straight pipes hahaha. Gotta love the Boxer growl. :D That thing had more like of a bark, sputter, growl sound. whereas the Legacy Turbo sound I'm talking about is much more of a deep powerful refined sound  .

my car definitely isnt quite inside, however i wouldnt call it loud. however from the rear of the car, the car sounds crazy. it first was my friend who said damn your car sounds so mean when i was pulling away from his house one time. i had never heard it from the outside (heh im always driving) so one time i had him take off so i could give it a listen, i have never heard a stock car sound soo good :D of course not including some exotics

i do have an intercooler and maybe its seems its a bit more deeper and pronounced tone now, but the exhaust is still stock :?

I find my turbo legacy to be very quiet, but I am also comparing it to my diesel Mercedes, which isn't quiet at all...

Mine's got a nice growling sound when the revs get up above about 3k, but it certainly doesn't rattle pennies in the console!!

STI engine/trans mounts definitely made my car louder inside, but even with a straight through exhaust turbo to muffler, it's not so much loud as permeating.

Boxers just sound better...

Mine was very quiet exhaust-wise stock. Turbo whine sounded mean inside, though. I had some one drive away from me with the stock stuff and the car does sound exceptionally mean for a completely stock car.

Now I am 3" catless with a straight-through muffler. I could rattle the teeth off of any dentures within 100 feet of my car (30 metres for the backward folk  ). My car freakin roars now and scares anyone nearby including fellow Subie owners. "It sounds soooo mean!"

So, yeah. I'll be putting a cat on it soon... and possibly a different muffler.

A friend had a 98 2.5RS with a custom-fabbed set of headers, port matched in size, very smooth, and a high-flow cat (that kept blowing out) with a big, straight magnaflow muffler.

It sounded MEAN, and i've heard a LOT of modified 2.5s, but this one was simply the most aggressive sounding exhaust i may have ever heard.

Mine is a bit subdued, maybe because of the muffler (dynomax straight) and the 8" Magnaflow tip (to clear the bumper), but it does have a resonance point at about 3K when coasting down in gear that sounds awesome. It's otherwise very throaty and smooth.

Surprisingly enough, my 2.2 with the mrt muffler sounds pretty decent for a n/a motor IMO. There's a definite spot that sounds best
