Bad MAF sensor code...but MAF seems OK
Two different part places read the code on my 1998 Legacy Outback (2.5L manual tranny) and told me I needed an MAF sensor. Since it was $300 I wanted to check it out further. I swapped MAF sensors with my wife's 98 Forester. The part numbers were the same and hers is running fine. After the swap my Legacy was still running crappy! My wifes car was still fine. I checked the voltage to my MAF sensor and got close to 12v (11.95). Any ideas? I need help and don't want to get it from the dealer. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the BBS.
If you swapped MAF's and still are having issues, then I'd suggest checking the MAF sensor wiring.
You mentioned your car is running crappy, can you elaborate what kind of problems you're having and when you started experiencing them.

Re: Bad MAF sensor code...but MAF seems OK
Josh,
The Legacy is idling a little rough and also misfires at low rpm/under load. At high speed and rpm she seems fine. The wiring to the sensor measures 12v with the key on and appears to have a good ground. I do not know how to check the signal wire. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Have you covered the basics; spark plugs, wires?

I'd suggest checking the basic stuff like Robert mentioned. If you've checked all that stuff, you can look at the service manual for instructions on how to check the MAF wiring.
I do not have the 98 manual, but have the 97 & 99. So either or should be the same or similar to your 98.
