Seemed easy, but... N/A in Turbo wagon ? %&*$

Post by fngearhead »

Picked up a non-running TW with an N/A swap back in Nov. Got it running on T ecu in Dec. Ran ok, but lacked power and idled rough. I swapped in N/A ecu a couple weeks ago. No start. Fuel pump wasn't running. Tried another N/A ecu, started right up, idled rough but smoothed out as it warmed up. Idles PERFECT now, but can't rev past 1500- 2000 without getting a lot of backfiring inside intake and exhaust. Smells a bit of rotten eggs as I continue to try to rev it. The cam and crank wires have been oriented properly for N/A use. Other than the engine and ecu, everything else is stock turbo stuff. I'm wondering now if the turbo fuel pump is over-fueling my N/A engine. Currently using a Jecs ecu and Autecs MAF. No codes now. Had a 24 IAC code 4 days ago. I have cleaned and adjusted IAC and reset ecu since then. Played with TPS adjustment yesterday and put it back to the white paint marks that I assume indicate factory settings. Any ideas would be helpful at this point. I just wanna get some use out of this thing until the $ appears for a JDM turbo motor.

Thanks!!
Brian

Does it have a cat on it, sounds like it could be clogged. May need a new one.

It does have a cat. I'm pretty sure the issue is electrical though. It drove decent and revved to redline when under the control of the 22T ecu with the same cat installed. It hasn't run enough on the N/A ecu yet to ruin a cat. Everything flowed and smelled normal on the T ecu.

turbo fuel pump wont overfuel because your regulator will send all the unburnt fuel back to the tank I ran a walbro 255 in my na for 6 months before did the motor swap

Hmmm... I think I'll try another N/A ecu then. I screwed around for several months on my EJ20G into N/A swap and finally tried another 22T ecu and it fired right up and ran great. GRRR!

I only suggested cat cuz you said you smelt rotten eggs which usually comes from the cat. Yeah thats weird though. If you swapped the cam & crank wires, running the jecs/autecs maf, and na ecu you should be good. Are you using the na iac valve?

Yep, I assume its an N/A IAC. I'm running the engine as I found it when I picked up this project. There were nuts and bolt and tools and parts hiding and missing all over the engine compartment. Engine and tranny were only bolted together on top, missing nuts on the bottom. Anyway, this thing is starting to give me brain damage. There's a lot of knowledge on this forum. Hopefully, an answer is right around the corner.
