HELP please. Door lock issues.

Post by wazzugabe »

I drive an AWD 91 Legacy Wagon, and my drivers door won't lock, when i push the lock, it just springs back to unlock without doing anything. Any ideas on what could be going on here?
I am gonna take the door panel off tomorrow when I have the time but I was just wondering who might have a clue what to look for.

Also, my tailgate lock is broken as well.

any comments are much appreciated!
thanks,
Gabe

There's a mechanism in there to keep the door from locking when the door is open, I don't know how it works but maybe whatever it reads off isn't getting signal that the door is closed.

I really only clicked this because of your username though, since I go to wazzu right now.

If it does this when you're inside the car, search for the door lock fix. There's one if not several detailed write ups for the fix to the latch mechanism.

If the key in the door encounters resistance, it might be the power lock actuator being dead.

If it only does it when you shut the door getting out, it's an idiot lock, so you have to hold the handle up when you close the door. For whatever reason, I only have the idiot lock on one of my doors, but I think they're supposed to be on both front doors.

For the tailgate, I don't know if you mean the lock or the handle. The handle is plastic and has a finite lifespan, so it gets brittle and breaks. If that's your problem, get a new one from a dealer. I don't remember what I paid for mine, but I don't think it was more than $12. Don't let them sell you the whole garnish or any of that other crap—all you need is the plastic handle assembly alone. It can look like it's part of the garnish, but it isn't.

Correct... I always have to wait for my wife to shut her door before I lock it, she always forgets.

(In her defense a person would have to be completely off their meds to see my car and think, "There has got to be something in there worth stealing.")

In your defense, they actually get stolen ALL the time around here. Or rather, up north of here but still. They're an easy car to steal apparently. I go through the same thing but my GF eventually learned and usually locks her own down now in my metro but with the subaru it's got auto locks so I don't have to worry about it. I lock my door by hand when I get out and it locks the rest of them for me. Just hold the handle up when I lock mine and close it and let go.
