Go for it. There's a guy in these parts who did an M swap into one...sickety powerful.

One day my "stable" will have all kinds of makes and years of cars. I have always had a thing for those 325ix's and the VR4's as well. :D

Over here the iX BMWs are as rare as hen's teeth! I don't like them because (a) the engine has all the power at the top end which doesn't work terribly well with an auto 'box and (b) tranny parts are hugely difficult to get in the UK.

If you can get the parts and it's a manual, go for it and have loads of fun!!! :D

Any idea if this guy has a website? A friend of mine was researching this very idea, but found out that the ix's axles won't hold the increased power. On top of that, it's nearly impossible to switch the fronts to beefier axles because at least one of them goes THROUGH the oil pan!! Craziness!!

If this guy knows a way around this "little" problem, he definitely knows something I don't.

Wow, a 325ix with an M motor. That's cool as hell. My BMW buddy would love to hear/read/see about this beast. Any additional info you could provide would be cool as hell.

Oh, and yes, you can get whatever the hell you want. If I really wanted a luxurious AWD car though, I'd get an Audi. My friend's got a GVR4 and it's pretty sick.

Ya Audis' are pretty sweet. When I got my Sport Sedan it was between it and either an audi 4000 quattro or a 90 quattro. Get a new S6 or the like. I like BMWs' though too. My brother in law has a late 90s' m3 and it's pretty phat! It's crap in the snow though. I always liked the 3000GT VR4 twin turbo but I've heard they have serious issues with the drivetrain
I can't remember the specific part (maybe tranny) that was an issue but I heard they (Mistubishi) subbed out for the parts and the manufacturer wasn't honoring the warranty and the parts were failing repeatedly causing Mistubishi to file a law suit.

i dont care for the m 3.2 motor.
i was considering buying an (z) m coupe. (the hatchback.) because I have always loved the look of them.
but I test drove an 01 with the 315 hp motor. the car was not near as quick as I thought it would be. plus it was so weak on the low end.
to me it felt like a horribly rough and laggy electronic throttle.
but I was told this car doesn't have egas. but not sure.
but you would take off from a stop give it about 1/4 - 1/2 throttle in first gear an it would bog very badly and barely pull away then I wouild give it about a 1/10th more throttle and it was like I floored it. I really disliked it.

I got an sti and I am really glad I did.

Having flogged the crap out of an STi, there's no other car I would even consider in the sub-$60K price range. It's fast as all hell. I'd LOVE to get my hands on an S6 or even better, an RS6. Now that's a fast as hell Luxo-wagon that I can handle, albeit not very well considering it's weight :lol:

Okay, here's why I don't like anything anyone has mentioned so far:

Although I salivate at the thought of owning a Audi TT :D, I will never own any VW, period. Their bottom ends are weak, and their electrical systems are crap after a few years. Audis too also have that famous "bad luck" I think some 5000's throttles were sticking open and people were driving them into their living rooms :shock: Also, anyone notice the TT's all of a sudden having little lip spoilers on the back? In Europe, some people were experiencing lift in the rear end, some serious accidents were reported!

BMW's are fine cars. I still believe they are the best builders of the piston engine. I mean in the 70's, for Pete's sake, they had a 1.6 liter 4cyl with 1000hp in Formula 1. That's right, one thousand. And it would last a whole two-hour F1 race. The beauty of turbos! 8)

However, for the street, they're still good cars, but to service them is ridiculous. It's simply too expensive. I don't want a car that I can't work on to some extent and then have to get reamed at the dealer...

Mitsubishi's are out. My grandparents had two of them. My grandmother had a 3000GT SL, and my grandfather still has a Diamante. The 3000GT was again ridiculously expensive to service ($1500 for a timing belt change) and parts are 3 times worse than for Subarus. The Diamante hasn't been golden either. It sprung a radiator leak in the tranny cooler part and a new rad cost almost $900 installed...

Oh and not too many Mitsubishis will make it to 100k miles without burning oil. I've seen it too many times. I keep telling my granpa to hold on for a few more miles, I want to see how much oil starts pouring out the tailpipe... :roll: I kinda still would want a GVR4 for the heck of it though, so I understand the attraction :)

Everyone I've met with an Audi (with the exception of my dad's old Fox) and a VW built after 1990 would never buy another one for all the problems they have (and one guy was a dealer and classic VW specialist). Not to mention the cost of repairs. My mechanic sometimes refuses people with them if he's in a bad mood as he hates them so much too. Eurotrash. And why is it you never see a VW older than a year with all their lights functioning? Nice interiors, though, so you can at least be comfortable while waiting for the tow truck.

But I would love an M5 6-speed (not the ugly new one coming up).

chock up another VW hater.
My fave VW is the base model passat. Whose brilliant idea was it to take the cheapest model and equip it with an engine that has 10:1 compression and a turbo?!?!?!
They're selling these to people who would put grain alcohol in to save a buck, don't do oil changes, etc etc etc, and giving them a heavy turbo car!!! Heavy+small diplacement boosted= hard working turbo. I doubt we will be seeing many of them on down the road... :roll:

How about them 1g vr6 powered cars? :D


325ix-- e30, 36, or 46?? Any are sweet, but ya can't beat the e30. I could go on forever about bmws... they're my real love.

Word of advise though, nobody daily drives their g60's anymore. Vr6's are hitting the wall now too. Get a cheap g60, pimp it out, put an altoid can under the gas pedal, and drive it to the parties on the weekends-- you'll be happy.

Ahhh...VW's...
my first "real" car was a 88 vw scirocco 16v. My friends and I used to call it the $h!trocco cause it broke so much. It was in really good cosmetic shape though, all black, it was a fun first car. I love the look of late 90's and newer audis and I love the good awd and powerful engines...I had really hoped they had they mechanical quality/reliability to go with it, cause then they would really make me salivate. I'd really love the RS6 sedan if you could get it with a stick or something like bmw SMGII gearbox. Any robotized manual really, I just don't want an auto, even if it is tiptronic.

Micum, your first car is exactly what my friend has had it up to his ears with... Granted his was gutted inside, no back seat or carpet, and his battery was relocated, whole car completely rewired, etc. etc. It was basically a street-legal race car, which I wouldn't have used as my daily anyway... But he used every last AAA tow he had coz the electrics were so screwed up. That thing left him stranded sooooooo many times...

He is a very leadfooted driver and after a very hard run down the highway, 2 hours straight, coming back from the 12 hour race in Sebring, he heard this ugly knocking noise in his engine. Sure enough, he spun a rod bearing... So after swapping cranks and a new set of oversized bearings... he drove the car for 3 more weeks, then blew a head gasket... He just got the car back up and running not two weeks ago, as he warped his head, and it spent some time in a shop getting refinished... It's still not timed properly, but it will run. And once it's ready he is waving goodbye and will probably never look at another VW again... 8)

the superchargers on those are a normal wear item like a cap & rotor on a carbeurated vehicle. just expect to replace it about every 50,000 miles. a have a friend who is a VW nut. he's had about ohhh... 6 or 7 different ones. he just got rid of a completely tweaked out G60 Corrado (really fast, lots of problems) and no longer will have more than one old VW (but he sure knows how to fix all of their problems...).

On a side note. He bought a '89 GL 4x4 as a winter car. We went offroading with my '87 Wagon and his Sedan last night. Good fun. Cheap cars. What more do you need?

In the early 90s BMW made a car called the 325iX. 3-series with a 2.5 liter engine and four wheel drive. The torsen center differential was kinda neat; they tweaked the static torque split to match weight distribution under hard acceleration.

It's good to hear that they're actually going to be releasing a 330Xi wagon. My friend's parents held off on getting a new car because they weren't satisfied with the 2.5L awd wagon offering.
