Took a 2.2 out of a 95 legacy auto and am putting it in a 96 outback auto.
1. Do I need to switch over the 2.5 flex plate to my 2.2 ? I assume I use the 2.5 tourqe converter that matches the 2.5 tranny.
2. The 2.2 doesn't have the ground connection near the coil do I need that ?
3. Ok to use the 2.5 ECU with my 2.2 ?

The flexplates are probably the same. I'd do a visual inspection and if they look the same and the 2.2 flex plate is in good condition, I don't see any reason why you can't use it.
Are you using the 2.5 coil or 2.2 coil?
The 2.5 ECU will probably work, however it may not be ideal. If the ECU connector plugs are the same, I'd suggest trying the 2.2 ECU.

This is a very common swap. Go check out Ultimatesubaru.org/forum - tons of info.
I've done this swap on a '99 Outback, but can't recall all the specifics. The 2.2 should be 99% direct swap. There were a couple of differences in the vac lines, too.
1. Flexplate/TQ: Use the one w/the trans you're using - LINK to get you started.
2. Coil connection: You're referring to the coil pack on top of the intake manifold, correct? They should be same. The coil changed in '97 or '98 to male terminals on the coil pack. (My '98 Forester w/the 2.5 still used the old female terminals, though??)
3. Use your OB ECU. It will run it as is. You can try the 2.2's, but not necessary.

The flex paint was different the 2.5 one was a little bigger in diameter so I switched that over to the 2.2
The ECU's had the same exact part # so I'm gonna go ahead and use the 2.5 one but I kept the 2.2 one just in case.
I was referring to the ground wire that bolts onto the manifold just to the left of the coil - there's not one on the 2.2
No I'm all set to go if I can remove 1 broken exhaust stud and a stuck front axle !
