Car on blocks please help lol

How to you separate the spring perch from the top hat? I'm swaping wrx springs in and just can't seem to remove them from eachother? Any tips?

Do you have a picture? The upper spring perch and top hat are one piece, are they not? Is this for the front or the rear? A picture would really help. I know on the rear springs on the legacy it's one piece. Hard to remember.

Those are front struts and top hats. On the left is KYB aftermarket strut that he's replacing the stock strut with on the right. Both pictures are fronts. The rears have smaller top hats. That sit directly on the spring.

So the rears do not separate? Basically what I'm doing is putting 06 wrx tein springs on. I have the wrx complete strut and I'm trying to put the lower spring perch on my 91 rear top hat

I read this:

If you have a 90-91 Legacy, you can use 04-07 Impreza springs as direct replacements. The 90-91 Legacies have tapered rear springs like the 04-07 Imprezas do, so they will fit. Below are 04 WRX sedan part numbers as an example.

04 WRX sedan front springs: 20330FE861
04 WRX sedan left rear spring: 20380FE830
04 WRX sedan right rear spring: 20380FE820

From my post below, here are the part numbers you will need to have to use 04-07 Impreza springs on your 90-91 Legacy.

04 WRX front top hat: 20323FA000
04 WRX front rubber spring seats: 20325AA000
(all 02-07 Impreza front top hats and rubber spring seats are the same)
91 Legacy rear upper rubber spring seats: 20375AA011
04 WRX rear lower rubber spring seats: 20375FC001
(all 02-07 Impreza rear lower rubber springs seats are the same)
04 WRX front strut bearing washers: 20326AA000
(all 02-07 Impreza front strut bearing washers are the same)

You can use 04-07 Impreza rear tapered springs on your 92-94 Legacy, but you will need to switch to the 90-91 strut mount setup. To do so, or if you just want to replace your strut mounts, you will need these part numbers:

All you have to do then is switch the springs out. I'm don't understand what the problem is? I put 04 sti struts and springs on my 91 legacy and all I did was put the rear top hats from the 91 legacy on the rear sti struts and springs and it was a direct fit.

The spring should be tapered to a smaller diameter on the top on the rear springs and it should be 5mm difference from the stock springs but it still fits.

The wrx springs were not tapered or this project would have been finished. I pit my 91 top hat on the wrx spring/strut and it wasn't close

Oh! OK, I misunderstood this whole thread. I thought for some reason by WRX you meant STI. OK well the WRX springs are not tapered and they require 92-94 top hats/perches. I had WRX complete struts and springs on my 91 as well before I put the STI struts on. I had to go to the junkyard and get some top hats from a 92-94 legacy because they went to a non-tapered spring in the rear on the facelift cars.

Sorry I didn't figure out this thread until now.
