Running rough, Code 17.

Post by asotwavb »

Hey Legacy Central,

Hoping someone has some insight on this one. Started the car last night after driving fine all day and the check engine light came on. It was the first day running the car in 6 months. Fresh oil change, 1/4 tank of 6 month old 93 octane, and i put 1/2 more in of new gasoline. Car now runs rough, low unsteady lumpy idle, has about a 50-60% loss in power i would say.

Checked codes this morning, and i got code 17, which is for the fourth injector. Where should i go now? I removed the injector and visibly checked all the wiring and everything seems in place. My next logical step is to replace the injector, or source a new set and get them flow tested and balanced. Is there anything else that can cause this code to be thrown?

Car:
1992 Subaru Sport Sedan
5 Speed
EJ20G motor out of legacy RS
440 CC injectors
Run off ej22t PCM

Thank you in advance, as i have to drive 4 hours to pick the car up, and wouldn't want to waste another trip there and back :(

Before you buy a new injector, check for power and ground through the injector's connector.

The only reason an OBDI Subaru would trip a code would be the following:
- The sensor is not getting power.
- The sensor is not properly grounded.
- The sensor is disconnected.
- The sensor is shot to the point where it cannot communicate with the ECU.

I'd check those first before you buy a new injector and that doesn't work because there is something wrong within the wiring.

Thanks for the reply. Ill have to head down there this weekend and do some diagnostic testing. It sucks because its quite a long haul for me to go work on the car :( Costs about 100$ in gas :(

Looks like im heading down there this weekend....

For the record, does anyone know if there is a differenece in years of 440cc injectors? Will a 1995 STI ej20g work with my 1st generation Legacy RS injectors?

You could try switching the injectors to another cylinder and see if the code fallows the injector. If it doesnt then you ruled out the injector itself and you can start testing your wires.

How about testing the injector per the FSM specifications? Manual is in the stuff you need to know forum....

Thanks for the replies guys. Testing will be the next step. It's difficult because its 4+ hours for me to get to the car, so i want to make the least amount of trips as possible.

I purchased 4 EJ20G 440cc injectors for a *good* deal, so when these come in, ill go down and start working on the car. I got the injectors for what it would cost in gas alone to go down there. Hopefully its not the PCM of wiring....I couldnt run diagnostic checks when i was down there because i was DVOM-less.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Hopefully i can get her purrrring again soon!

FWIW: The night before she stopped loving me, i laid the smack down on SR20 with a T4 turbo, FMIC and tune

My father installed a new injector, same problem. He tested power and ground and has both (12 v power) at all injectors. And no resistance in the ground. Full spark at all cylinders.

Any ideas where to look next?

Finally brought it to a shop. The first one wouldnt work on swapped cars, even though subarus are like LEGO's.

It was at a pretty high end subaru dealership for the past WEEK and they don't know whats wrong with the car.

I am getting spark, and fuel. Does anyone know where i can get a coolant temp sensor? Are they interchangeable with newer model subarus? How about the MAF / Crank sensor?

I would just love to have a dependable car, not a crappy running money pit, like the one ive got :(
