did the snokus delete yesterday...

Post by antslegggy »

And it turned out marvelously, not quite the noise im looking for but i do understand what everyone else is talking about. and as for the power gains they are minimal, but you can tell that its there. the response is a little crisper as well. now what to do .... ive heard alot of talk of custom cai , seen a couple . was wondering what anybodys take on them are, those who've done it or one themselves.
i crave more noise tho..
im working on posting pics of the car soon for everyone, where would you post that thread?
oooooo and a saw someone who and done a sort of ram intake where the snorkus was, it was interesting , there was a whole on the passenger side fender..... hmm.
rambling , sorry
thanks guys

You might be talking about me? I have a NACA duct in the side bumper. I don't know how much real difference it makes, but it seemed to feel a little perkier on the highway.

meh, its just different , something that make your car just that much less a clone to all the sheeple in life. im into odd things and i saw it (if it is your leggy) on your leggy first then on a sti on the cover of a super street where the intake was in the headlight,
thats just cool im ganna have to figure something out for when the weather gets nicer.

I'm big into aircraft and aerodynamics, so having something functional developed by NACA was appealing as well as it being something that doesn't quite stand out, but is enough to get people to wonder what's up with the otherwise pretty ordinary looking wagon. I like that it pulls in air without contributing to drag like a protruding scoop. If only I had the resources to develop my design with a NACA cowl around the radiator and AC condenser.

what is naca? did you remove the stock air box or leave it there and do some sort of fabrication to the duct in the side bumper , did you make the duct yourself or was it a part that you purchased somewhere?

National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Precursor to NASA. They researched and conducted aerodynamic tests. Among other things, they came up with a system for aerofoil design and spec as well as the NACA cowl I mentioned, which was an aerofoil in a ring shape designed to fit around radial engines to reduce their significant drag. It was an improvement over the Townsend Ring developed in the UK and could generate forward thrust under the right conditions (the aerofoil shape would generate lift in the forward direction). I think it would be interesting to try this on a road car with the radiators (The Focke-Wulf 190D did this with an annular radiator), but it would require the entire vehicle shape to change to suit. I designed such a thing, but lack the money to build it. The NACA duct is a low drag device used to channel high speed air into whatever you might want air for, slowing the air down and increasing the pressure at the same time. The Lamborghini Countach has something that at least resembles it in shape on the side and which is bisected by the doors.

I just ran a flexible intake hose I found at an auto parts place to the air box through the hole in the inner fender. No snorkel.

Did you fabricate the cowl or was this produced by a company ? That's kinda nifty

you can by intercooler kits on ebay and go that route, thats what i did. 3in piping, couplers, and clamps make for a great setup.

I presume you mean the duct. I got it from Graham Goode in the UK about 12 years ago, but you should be able to order something similar in the US for cheaper. Stock car suppliers might be a good place and you should be able to find them in clear polycarbonate, too, (which you could paint on the inside with whatever paint they use on R/C car bodies) as they are used as vents in plastic windows.

I'm a dumbass for missing the more obvious road car NACA duct, another Lamborghini even—the Espada. There were two on the top of the hood for the ventilation system (unlike most cars, which get the air from the high pressure zone at the base of the windshield). I forget why they did this, but I can't imagine that the brick-like car was so aerodynamically efficient as to not have a significant high pressure zone at the windshield base! I almost bought one, you'd think that would be the example that would pop out of my head first.

As for the cowl (if you actually were wondering about that) I would have to fabricate, but I'd need to do some extensive wind tunnel or CFD work to make it functionally worthwhile. I couldn't even draw much from old NACA research into optimized aerofoil shapes for the cowls since I wouldn't be using it to cover a radial engine, would be running at ground level, not in the air (obviously), and the speed I'd want to optimize it for would be around stall speed or less for many of the aircraft that used it, so the aerofoils that work for those applications would not work for mine.

more noise? Have you done a turbo silencer delete (Aka coffee cup mod)?

also suggest a K&N filtercharger drop in filter and plumb your airbox to the hole where the snorkus used to be. That will give you functional cold air intake. You could also run some ducting from the airbox to the passenger side Foglamp pod (post face cars) for a stealth ram-air system.

that website was amazing, holy crap thats fun stuff,
and idk if redlines question was posed to me, but ive done the snorkus delete , i havnt done the coffee cup mod, i still have a bunch of questions about that mod, but ya i have the k&n drop in (things a beast) love the sound of the turbo and intake.
but i totally snagged one of those naca ducts, i dont wanna jock evomovements idea , but cold airflow with no drags a fun idea.
custom cold air here i come.

I sized mine so that the opening matched the diameter of the hole in the fender and got a hose to match so that there was no diameter change (well there's some because of the curves) from duct to box.

I read a post that was linked here from somewhere else where they did a walk through on that. The bought a silencer delete (coffee cup mod) from some rally place, desnorkused and then plumed to the outer fender. I THINK they used a 2" PVC pipe. Cant find the post now but was a wonderful read.

And yeah. Sorry for the confusion. My first response was aimed twords the original post.

that article was the one that got me up off the couch and into my garage and into my car, lol, yanked that snorkus out right quick. the coffee cup mods sweet, i wish i could find that post and figure out what the rally company was, i even went to their website and looked for the part, i think you have to call them to order it , its not online. to my knowledge atleast.
