Post by 1-3-2-4 »

The driver's side cams what can I use to hold them while I remove the bolt to take them off?

Are you talking about removing the bolt for the Cam Gear that the T-belt rides on?

If so, remove the valve cover and the cam shafts have a spot for an open-end wrench - i just used a crescent.

I used it on all 4...BTW, this is w/the engine OUT of the car. If you're doing this IN the car, I'm sure it'll be harder to access them....but not sure what you mean by 'recessed'.

here is a picture I found off the net for the drivers side cams they are recessed Image

the passenger side does not look the same.. to be honest I don't know why the passenger and drivers side are not the same as far as looks.

I'm talking about removing the valve covers - not the T-belt covers as you've shown. There is a $pecial tool from $ubaru for this to hold them...also people get creative and build a wedge to put in between them to hold them...but be aware you might break one.

Sorry can't be more help....I'd search over on the ultimatesubaru.org/forum as there's a ton of info about these engines over there (mostly due to the HG failures).

Here's where you access the cams to hold them w/the crescent:

edit: They are different as the cylinders are offset - if you look straight down on the top of the engine you'll see how the IM is offset too. So one side sticks out more, and to allow the belt to run correctly they offset the gears....make sense? (not sure it does to me either - )

Hmm well I was told if I gotta remove the cam and I have to take off the bearing cap I should be able to replace it but it's not like it's some super flexible seal..

I'm just concerned about just breaking the bolt loose at first.. but the crescent wrench on the cam lobes makes perfect sense now.

I just have to see what the specs are in the FSM for the Tq numbers.

If you're taking the cam out anyway, you can remove it with the gear and place the hex of the cam in a vice and hit it with an impact or a socket on a breaker bar. Those suckers are tight sometimes.

haha not directed at you but damn does anything automotive not use a vice? lol

I don't have a workbench to mount one and I'm not thrilled about trying to build one.
