Hey all I am new to this site and wanted to get outlook on this idea and see how hard it will be to do.
I am getting a 1997 Legacy gt with 2.5 rs engine I am wanting to swap it out for my 91 2.2 engine any ideas?
Just to make sure I am understanding you correctly, you want to take the engine from your 91 and put it into your 97. The big issue you'll run into is the fact the 97 is OBD2 and has a different engine management setup than the 91 which is OBD1. I do not believe all the sensors are the same between engines and you will likely have issues getting the 97 ECU to work without a CEL. Assuming you have a state inspection, any CEL's will keep you from passing.
the early EJ25 dohc motors are notorious for failing head gaskets. In my opinion, you're better off not swapping the engine from the 97 into the 91. It's not very simple and will probably cause you a ton of headaches.

It'll physically fit I believe, but you'll run into issues with the wiring and would likely need to rewire things and need to use the original 2.5 ECU.
Its been done before. I believe the 2.5 cam/crank sensors work with the stock ECU. Something needs to be done to fit the EJ22 throttle body to the EJ25 manifold. Search the engine section, its in there, somewhere.
