Removing the front bumper (Anyone have a walkthrough?)

Post by SWRT »

From what I've seen through searching on here it's a pain, but that's really all I've seen.
Does anyone have any pictures of the process? Maybe where to remove the bolts and stuff?

I'm going to have a neighbor build me a push bumper and I want to take it off to reinforce
the bumper beam and weld mounting brackets to the car so the push bumper can be removed
if I need to.

If I am correct, there are two bolts on each side you access from the top in the front of the engine bay. There is also a "hidden" smaller bolt on the driver's side I think that is accessed from the side or bottom ( can't remember- anyone else chime in here) in about the same area as the other bolts.

That is about it.

That doesnt sound too bad. How come everyone complains about it then? Most I've seen say it takes hours to get off.

there's 1 10mm nut just below each corner marker (accessible from the fender well) there's 1 10mm nut and bolt on each side right next to the tire where the bumper cover ends, 4 17mm Bolts on the frame rails behind the headlights (Accessible when hood is open) and possiby some clips or bolts underneath the car on the bottom of the radiator support

It's not that bad, but there are a couple hard to reach bolts. I can't speak on the 92-94 models, but can provide comments on the 90-91.

As previously mentioned, there are two bolts below each headlight that hold a clamp that need to be removed. You have to remove the headlights to get at these bolts. There are several small bolts on the bottom side of the bumper cover that need to be removed. There is a clip on either side of the bumper cover at the far back that hold it to the fender. You need to remove the fender liner to get at these clips/bolts. Then there is nut that needs to be removed that holds the bumper cover to the front part of the fender, just behind the corner light. Once you get those off, you should be able to pull the bumper skin off. Then there are two larger bolts on either side of the frame rails that hold on the bumper beam.

Here's some various pictures of the front bumper setup when I added my AWIC exchanger.
