That's true... but the EJ22G isn't all that different internally from the EJ20G. Castings are different, yes, but ... I dunno. The EJ22G is a lot like a cross between the naturally aspirated EJ22 and the EJ20G.

Interesting...
I too am surprised by how low those numbers are. Especially combined with how many I see (given I live in the subaru state) and how many we have on this board here...
I also vaguely remember seeing productions numbers, and I thought that 91 was one of the years with the highest productions numbers, especially of manuals, and so its surprising that it would be so low, especially cause I thought they had at least produced a thousand manuals, maybe more...
I think they might be BS numbers too.

That's only one year also, I don't think the numbers are too far off. Sure you think there are a lot of turbos because a lot of people here have one, but do a search on cars.com for legacies and look and see how many turbo's out of the n/a there are, one maybe two. Or look around town and see how many turbos you see, I rarely see any. Then again I'm in cali so who knows

Having looked through parts books.....there is quite a bit of little stuff that is different below the skin. Whether it's a bumper beam or little bracket. I just can't see them manufacturing & designing all these different little parts for such a few amount of cars. Only other thought is they stole parts from the t-legacy line for oversea markets for the US turbo legacy.
If not....subaru wasn't real wise in their production methods, and was probably the reason they didn't sell too many of the car.

Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site, and for your inquiry. We do
not
have the figures as to how many of these vehicles are still registered.
I am
not sure as to how you could acquire this information.
Our Distribution Department did, however, provide the information on how
many
of the Legacy Sport Sedan AWD models were sold in the United States from
the
'91 through the '94 model years.
In the '91 model year, 58 5-speeds were sold, and 149 automatics were
sold.
In the '92 model year, 6 5-speeds were sold, and 5 automatics were
sold. In
the '93 model year, 25 5-speeds were sold, and 45 automatics were sold.
In
the '94 model year, 170 5-speeds were sold, and 230 automatics were
sold.
This is a total of 688 of these vehicles sold from the '91 through the
'94
model years.
Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance. Best wishes!!

So you guys thought the 91 numbers were low. How about 11 in 92? if you can find moe than 11 owners of 92's, you can prove the number is wrong.

manufactured & sold are two very different things. How many 92 turbos do we have on the board?
I still think those numbers are low....but what do I know...right...

Why is everyone so up in arms about this? The cars were built in Japan. They have more product variations over there than any one person could know about. It's part of the manufacturing process that ultimately led to Japanese cars taking over the domestic market right here on their home turf even with tariffs and all that.
The car probably shares a whole bunch with JDM models except where regulations require something else over here. Making an extra engine mold that is practically the same as an EJ20t is not that hard. And in case you haven't noticed... it's impossible for a manufacturer to make money on every single model they sell. Ex: Cavaliers and I think the old Escorts lost over $1000 on each one sold... and they sell gobs of both of these cars. Bringing over a turbo car so that America knows that Subaru makes kick-butt cars is not a bad market strategy... even if they never make a profit off of making an extra engine mold.
Everyone is smoking caffeine or something. What's the big deal? It's a rare model. No... manufacturers do not make profit off of every model, nor do they try.

There are plenty of instances where manufacturers build cars without even the intent of generating a profit, but my doubt of these figures stems from the fact that I've seen too many of these cars for me to believe these numbers. I'm a person who's used to seeing low volume cars so I'm just going by how many turbos I see vs. known rareities. There are at least five turbos in my area.
I suppose, there are more important things to worry about, though.

I heard that the 92 was the rarest but I thought they sold something like 36 5mt in 92. Don't remember where I saw it.Legacy777 wrote:manufactured & sold are two very different things. How many 92 turbos do we have on the board?

Mark....I'm inclined to agree as I see many of them. Supposedly Vermont has more subarus per capita than any other place in the US, or was it the world, can't remember....and I know connecticut and the northeast has a lot more subarus generally than most of the country. Colorado too has a lot, and the pac norwest. But one would think subaru would know how many they sold.

I'm sticking to Matt S's 15,000 Sport Sedan and Mike Shields' 3,000 Touring wagon numbers. They could be off, but these double-digit numbers are just wrong in my opinion.

Fuel for the fire, these numbers from SOA this morning (edited for format):
Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your message. As has been provided, the following are the production numbers for the 1993 Legacy Turbo Sedan. We do not have Sales figures; but, I would assume that they were all sold.
I have the production numbers for the '91 - '94 Legacy Turbo models:
'91 5-speed - 58, '91 automatic - 149,
'92 5-speed - 6, '92 automatic - 5,
'93 5-speed - 25, '93 automatic - 45,
'94 5-speed - 170, '94 automatic - 230.
This is a total of 688 vehicles.

688 eh?
I don't think we can trust SOA at this point, seriously. That's absolutely false, there's no doubt.

No. We're not sure where Subaru got those numbers, but we've pretty much proven them wrong right here on this board.
