Idea I've been toying with.
I've noticed whenever I see a gen. 1 wagon with a stock roof rack, its super short, almost looks short enough to go on the roof of my sedan. So I've been wondering if I can grab a rack from the junkyard and put it right on my roof with no length issues, the roof is 45" long along the trim and if someone with a stock roof rack could measure the length of the side that would be great. Thatnks in advance.

Well I was at a junk yard the other day and the wagon I was gonna use for measurements is gone. So if someones got a wagon with the stock roof rack, I would appreciate it if you could measure one of the side bars.

Re: Idea I've been toying with.
So far the only roof rack like thing I've seen are Thule and INNO. But thats only from one site, after googling "aftermarket roof rack subaru legacy" and clicking the first link. When I chose base racks, only INNO came up but I've seen pictures of Thule racks on bc Legacies before so thats why I included Thule in the list. Personally, I would like to use a stock one(if it will fit) because I plan on using the front bar for lights and would like to get a spare front bar without the lights.

My SS came with a Subaru rack, very simple design but removed it as I had no need for it. I'll share some pictures when I'm off work.

Big revival. But I have found an oem Subaru roof rack that will fit the first gen. sedans. Head to the wrecking yard and hunt for a late '80s GL wagon with a roof rack on it, I measured two or three different racks and they all are small enough to fit on the sedan roof. I'm pretty sure theres only like four inches to spare length wise and I think six width wise. Once I have enough cash, I'll go pull one and see for myself if it will hit. As of now, I'm not totally sure if one will fit but the measurments say it will.
