repairing crankshaft keyway/pulley & re-setting timing
Im getting ready to do this and was hoping to get some expert advice .... im thinking i can remove timing gear off of crankshaft and repair the gouged/wollered out area with some type of liquid metal repair and re-install keyway / replace gear....then re-set timing belt... I would appreciate all comments or suggestions including links if they are out there... Thanks to BlackBart for the lowprice pulley.. Salute !

Do you have any specifics on repair products you plan to use?
I wouldn't trust anything less than a welded and machined repair. Any good local machine shop should be able to do that.

Im planning on using Locktite / Quickmetal to fill in the small gouge in the crankshaft...
Im needing advice on the following :

Then i will remove the crank gear for timing belt, proper procedure
Im hoping then to use the quickmetal and install crank gear & new keyway , pp
Then to re-install timing belt , the crank gear spun out of time so i will need to start from scratch, pp
The gouge in crank seems to be small so im hoping this will all work..Im a newbie to repairing Subaru's but have owned them for years... Im hoping to get some expert advice & possibly some links for reference..Ive done alot of searching on this site but have not been successful.. Please..all help appreciated

Thats not going to hold up. That pulley sees a lot of torque. Youll regret doing it that way. Repairing a pulley is not cost effective. Replace it. You can find one at. Junkyard for $10 or on the forums for $35 shipped.

I purchased a replacement pulley from a vendor on this website... Should be here this coming week..
Im speaking of the keyway slot that is in the crankshaft that the crank timing belt pulley rides on..The drive belt pulley for the crank also rides on this.. The gouge is minimal in the crank & im hoping this will hold up...dont want to replace crank or engine...wish me luck..

If the keyway is still somewhat intact, you should be fine. Mine broke off, leaving about half the keyway. I put a new pulley and key on and ran another 150k miles before pulling the engine for something unrelated.

Yeah if the gouge is minimal you should be able to use something in there to keep the keyway from moving around. Try to make sure the new key is set where it should be, and then try and smoosh the liquid metal around it. Make sure to smooth it out so you can get the crank gear back on the crank.
Like Steve said, if it's not damaged too badly, you should be ok. Make sure to torque the crank pulley to 120-140 ft-lbs

I have never done it but I have heard of people using JB weld to hold the key in and it working just fine. I think you will be good as long as like the post above says you make sure that the area around is smooth to get the gear back on fine.

Thanks to all for info.... Im going to use quickmetal by 3M / Locktite.. but, I do still need quite a bit of help to hopefully do this job on my own...i have removed radiator, drive belt tensioner & timing cover..

So to get the timing belt off you need to line up all three marks, one on each cam gear and one on the crank gear, they should all point up and the keyway on the crank is going to be pointing down. If you are using the same timing belt, then you are going to want to use some paint or a marker or something visable to mark the timing belt where each of the timing marks are on the gears and the direction of the belt. Now there are a few ways that you can remove the timing belt, since it will have the old style tensioner on it, you cant really easily compress the tensioner on the car so you will either have to remove the tensioner or one of the idlers to get the belt off and then compress the tensioner very slowly with a press or a clamp and then find something to fit through the hole to lock it in place. After the belt is off the crank gear should just slide off, if not you can gently pry on it working around it as long as you DO NOT pry on the teeth that stick out because the car will not run if these are messed up. Install is just in reverse and will be pretty obvious after doing the rest.
